Hey kids, quick question--

I have the Kaymar tire carrier for OEM bumper. I have been toying with the idea of bolting or welding on an additional jerri can carrier to hold one jerri can. My friend says he thinks the brackets are barely stout enough to handle a tire and alloy, much less an extra 50-60 lbs. I said that traveling with it open, we may have a problem, but closed, the weight is distributed between the bracket and the latch. He says I'm crazy to try it. I'm torn.

What do you think?

Is this the same friend that disagrees with the rain gutter mounts? Might I suggest a new friend?
:D

Sorry couldn't resist.

As for the Jerry can....why not figure out what the can full would weight and counter lever the approximate weight out there and see how it works?

Just and idea.

If i'm not mistaken, the tire carr. is mounted with a trailer hub and its grade #8. i never looked under the bumper to see what kind of suport there is to the hub, should be very strong

Yep...same jerk. Mr. Buzzkill McOvercautious Welderman.

Anyway, here's the breakdown...

Jerri Can empty: 5 lbs.
5 gal. of petrol @ 6 lbs. per gallon: 30 lbs.

The carrier itself has GOT to weigh at least 15-25 lbs. by itself.

So, overall weight is 50-60 lbs. Which, now that I think about it, does seem like a lot...

Not sure if your Kaymar could handle the extra weight. Though if you mounted your jerry can this way, it would put less strain on the carrier while open (less leverage and probably less weight).

I hang up to 4 bikes off the hi-lift on my Kaymar all the time. No problem.

Kaderabek, do you have the full Kaymar bumper? Shahram has the Kaymar carrier on the OEM bumper. Looks like this

I would think it should handle the extra weight from a jerry can.

I've used the tire carrier as a step to get up onto the roof to place things into the roof rack a number of times, no worries.

That said, beyond the bolts already provided by Kaymar, I also put welds where the tire carrier-frame moutn area mounts to the frame. This has made it much stronger and more stable.

Its designed to hold a Hi Lift + Spare Tire, I don't imagine the jerry can would weigh more than a High Lift would.

I saw a setup with two jerry cans hanging of the kaymar carrier (For the carrier that fits over the stock bumper. They guy does all his long overlanding trips with it and also did the monster dunes of Namibia with it. No problems ... to date.
