We had the pleasure to become a statistic for the Town of Cary, maybe dropping it down a notch from being a "low crime" city.

Someone decided that they wanted my XM radio and 80gb Video iPod out of my FJC. Sometime between 4:30p yesterday and 6:00a this morning, my truck was dropped down on notch in its technology inside. My girls opened the truck to get presents out while my wife was walking the dogs with the in-laws ~4:30 and left the truck open afterward, assuming it self locks, which it does after it has been running and the key is taken out but not after just unlocking to get inside. Mikaela discovered the loss on her way to swim practice this morning.

Oh well, at least they didn't get to the Powertank in the back. My theory is that a "kid" was watching the girls get the presents out of the truck and stuck their nose inside right after they went inside. Gave a report to the Cary PD in the morning once we realized they were gone. Good thing I kept serial numbers just in case they are dumb enough to sell them at a pawn shop. The XM radio is dead to anyone since XM registered it as stolen and it can't be activated w/o my authorization. But, Apple doesn't do anything similar with iPods, I'm sure the stolen database they would have to maintain would be massive.

You think you live in a decent neighborhood only to find out there is at last one dirtbag living nearby. The worst part is that they just had a TV report and newspaper article on people getting their garages ripped off from leaving the door open. I brought it up to the family then one night, leaving the truck unlocked = victim.

You know what's coming next...keep your doors closed and locked...

bummer... it come down to a simple lack of respect. The sad thing is, it can be taught by any parent worth their salt.

Wow, that sucks Jerry. At least that was all they got :steer:

Cary is going to pot, it's all those yankees bringing their nonsense here.

Sorry to hear about this Jerry. If there's a silver lining, perhaps both of your daughters will store this experience away and practice a bit more security for the rest of their lives.

Crime and Christmas always reminds me of a fond story from when I lived in Richmond VA, a guy OD'd and died on my doorstep on Christmas Eve.

Thanks for that heart-warming Christmas story Joe. "Miracle On Broad St" eh?

Jerry, tough break. More often than not, in areas like this, it is the affluent teens that are bored or want a little money for beer or weed that's not "on the books" with mom and pops. I never used to keep my doors locked (stupid, I know). But the last 10-15 years I have. Hell, about 3 years ago I had a DSLR stolen from my truck (unlocked) while I was home b/w 4pm and 8pm during the summer (daylight). It sucks!

Take it from my experience, I did a day in jail, 1 year intensive probation, and 4 years unsupervised probation for going into unlocked cars (late at night) while I was in high school.

Always lock your car, and never leave your keys in the ignition! I could have had a brand new (at the time) Corvette, but Grand Theft Auto was not something I was willing to face...

Bored teenager(s) is the most likely culprit...

The feeling you get when your stuff is taken really sucks...like you have been violated.

When I was in school at UNCW my roommate and I had our laptops (power cords too), 2 watches, a few pairs of shoes, some clothes and liquor taken from our apartment (which was in a really nice part of town). Someone must had been 'staking out' our place b/c it happened midday during an hour span when I had left for class and before my roommate came home from work for lunch. We think they came through an unlocked window. Atleast they didn't take my dog...she was young and in a crate at the time.

Hell, my youger brother had is apartment in Chapel Hill broken into during last Xmas break and they damn near stole everthing. The only thing they couldn't take was his huge TV since it wouldn't fit through the window they kicked in...

One last story...about a month ago one of my good friends in Wilmington had someone break into an attached storage shed, cut a hole in the wall, shoved a small child through the hole and really did taken everything he had. Even his trash can...here is a pic of the hole they made in the wall.

Definitely a bummer Jerry.
hole.webp

I know how you feel. In high school I had my car cleaned out (radio, CDs, tapes, radar detector, etc.) while locked in my driveway. Unfortunately the thief is now a mayor. Go figure.

Good that they didn't steal the truck or do any other damage. You might be able to get the ipod and radio replaced with either car or home insurance (that's what I did).

Sorry to hear that. That's exactly why I put an automatic gate on our driveway. Not for the gadget sake, but to keep people from looting my open garage door. At certain times of the month, my wife was notorious for driving off with the garage doors open and all my plasma, welders, etc. in plain sight. Not good. I must have had my neighbor call me a dozen times...."want me to shut your garage for you?". When we were in Atlanta, the garage opened right to the house with no lock between the house and the garage. Someone literally could have seen we weren't home and cleaned us out.

last year in greenville i went to my parents for the weekend and came back to my $5000 Snap on tool box was gone. Along with 4 tv's and some other electronics. Dumbasses left 600 bucks cash that was under my TV....
