Hello all,
just registered.

I collect money for long time, and two years ago bought land cruiser 73. 3.4 liter engine 1985!
did until now:

Shock absorbers, Springs, lifted new tires and engine Treatment.
Planning to do some trip next spring (the plan was for this year - but the Corona did not helped).
I have lot things that I need to solve but I need help in 3 main problems:

1. Roof rack. I have the model with the hard-top. I was reading in the forum her....and there is some solutions...But the post is old. there is any new solutions?

2. rear bumper. to avoid weight on the doors in the back I would like to buy bumper the the wheel and the Jerrycan sitting on arm with axle. I did see that there is some solutions...but there is nothing for, Europe.... import costs from Australia will cost much more then the parts...any recommendation for European manufacture?

3. I'm not planning to do hard core road. do I must have to have Diff-Luck?

many thanks!
Ben.

Herzlich Willkommen
Welcome!

Habe auch einen BJ73 von 85.
I also have a BJ73 from 85.

Wo wohnst du? Ich bin in Leverkusen
Where do you stay? I'm in Leverkusen near Cologne.

Poste mal ein Bild von deinem Wagen.
Please post a pic of your rig.

Zum Dachträger: Altes Auto, altes Problem.
Die einzig neue Lösung scheint kleben der Befestigungen zu sein (z.b. Airlineschienen)
Hängt halt von der benötigten Last ab.
Regarding the roof rack: Old car, old problem.
The only new solution appears to glue on the mounting, eg using airline rails
It all depends on the load capacity required.

Google mal.
Concerning the rear bumper. You need to check with TUV (road legal permisson for mods). There are dealers of the usual suspects around in Europe, too (eg ARB, Frontrunner). Just google.

Diff Locks

The Landcruiser is capable of a lot of serious offroading Probably mor than you instantly dare to go for.
Diff Locks help on serious entanglement with traction loss on multiple wheels, and in real serious conditions.
I personally regard good tires, adjusted tirepressure and some recovery gear and a winch more important in the first place.

Enjoy! Viel Spaß!

You should have a fibre glass roof. They are not strong enough to hold a roof rack on bad ground. You can use the gutters, but the roof rack is only good for light weight items. I would probably keep it under a hundred kgs . Use it for solar panels or suitcases. No tool boxes, water, fuel or tyres.

Along with the bumper, you may have to find someone who can make it. One way might to buy and cut the steel yourself and get someone who can weld to weld it together.

May not be an option in Germany.
Bumpers are regarded safety relevant items in case of a crash. They might be subject to authorities approval on vehicle inspection
(TUV).
Not sure this applies to rear bumpers, though. Ben needs to talk to TUV first.
Getting approval for a selfmade bumper will be difficult and costly.

Hello,

Welcome to the madness.

Regarding the roof rack, your truck has a fiberglass top. As stated above, it cannot hold much weight. It may be better not to use it. There is plenty of space inside.

Rear bumpers may need to comply with local safety regulations. Ask your local off road suppliers about compliance.

As for differential locks, you may or may not need them. A 70 Series is quite capable off road as it is. Make sure you have proper tires first. And make sure your rear axle is a full floating type before considering lockers.

Hello all, and thanks for the warm welcome!

Will try answers all the issues:

  • The main reason that I would like to have a roof rack is to put a tent (~70-80KG). There is space in the 73 but there is no good solution for sleeping area. Below I will see list of all the option that I consider:
  • pop-up roof - there is no frame to hold it and all the “hard-top” will be not stabile.
  • To sleep inside - even if I will fold the sites to the front, I have less then 2 n long and additionally – there isn’t space for the mattress and to sleep between the bed and the roof (less then 50cm)
  • There is some light weight “slid-in” pick-up camper:
  • From Germany - -Price 30K euro!!!

  • From (I think!) Swiss:

the last solution that i"m starting to thing about is to do holes in the roof and that the roof rack will be connected to the two roll bar :

I"m from Freiburg....Germany, and will try to upload some pictures in the weekend!

will be happy to hear you notes/comments

I started something like the above pictures a few months ago but have stalled out as we are in the middle of moving.

Here were some ideas and photoshops I did for mine. I ended up getting a high-top FRP than came from Europe. There appears to be a few of these tops available there.

BJ74 Poptop, modular top camper or something

Now I think the small slide in camper would be awesome for these MWB rigs. That Gladiator setup is pretty sweet. I've been scavengine craigslist for smaller popups that might work. It would probably be much easier than trying to build the poptop from my second roof.

Here is some racks, not sure where they are from, but they mount into the body, and then the roof rails. I think mounting all four legs of the roof rack into the body would be better than cutting holes in the FRP top. You can always fill/weld holes, and reinforce them.

@gilmorneau sold this one, you can see how that rack is mounted. You wouldn't have to do the front part by the windshield if you crossbraced the 2 uprights.

I doubt any of those slide-in campers would fit a J73 FRP. Those are usually designed for pickups.

There are some threads around describing bolting the roof rack to the interior rollbars, using the hardtop mounting points in the front rollbar.

But I'm with FJBen. Best solution would be frame mounts.

BTW: I'm thinking on building a bed in my BJ73, too. If I fold my passenger seat all to the front, I have 2m+ lengths in ~40cm hight from the floor.
Planning to do a storage based on Euro-boxes as a support. Comparable to this: ALUSTECK Campingmöbel.
Sorry DE only.

Hello all (and happy new year!)
still looking for a nice and practice solution for sleeping area in my 73.
I did find this one in the net:

1610290608815.png

this "thing" (device / adaptor) in for jeep Wrangler JK that also has hard top. Surco Safari Hardtop Rack for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK - https://www.quadratec.com/products/12135_9003_07.htm
I thinking to make something like that too. the main question is:
can it hold??? is the 73 hard top + the roll cage will be strong enough to hold ~ 220-240 kg?
Roof tent ~ 60 kg.
Rack - 10 kg.
2x sleeping people 150 kg

what do you think?

I will be great full for any note or common.

Many thanks, Ben.

The strenght of the 73' hardtop has been discussed several times in this forum. (Just search).
Apparently, kind of common sense is: For heavy load, the roof rack should distribute its load to the body, e.g. by be bolting trough to the roll cage or by any other support. Roof racks + tent + people IS heavy load, I think.

The construction shown in your pic above just clamps the mount for the roof rack down to the hard top and prevents drilling into it. But it isn't kind of a supporting column!
It doesn't clamp the load down to any other support, in particular in a 73 as there is some space between the interior roll cage and the hard top roof.
All the load goes on the hard top, still, + some extra force to the lower window frame (not sue how solid that might be...)
Distribution of the load is however to a bigger area on the hard top, though,; bigger e.g as the rivets of the back sill, which is often used to clamp the roof rack to...
