Hello all,
I have been reading the threads for a while and recently purchased a 99 LC. Purchased from a dealer and inquired about the 90k service, which they said they completed, including the timing belt and water pump. Also purchased a two year drivetrain warranty. Car seems to be in pretty good shape, aside from a few things that I wanted to detail here and get some opinions on. Having said that, I realize the car is 15 years old and will need some work and maintenance, which I am happy to give it since I have wanted one for a while. So, here are the issues thus far:
-Antenna does not automatically go up or down. Seems this is pretty common. Will be replaced by dealer.
-Sunroof gets stuck open and makes a strange noise (since it gets stuck) and I have to force it to close.
-Power lock does not work on drivers side. This also seems common. Also will be replaced by dealer.
-When driving, it seems like the fan blade (or something) makes a lot of noise; specifically, it sounds like the fan is always running and it overpowers all other sounds. Doesn't matter the temp or how long its been running. Sound increases and decreases with accelerator input. Ultimately, its somewhat loud inside. Any thoughts? Also, Im looking for a solid LC mechanic in the Thousand Oaks area of Southern California. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely sounds like fan clutch. When you shut the car off does it make a squeezing of air sound in the fan belt area?

I haven't noticed a squeezing of air sound upon shutoff, but Ill check it out. Also, I am looking through the posts on this forum as to learn more about the vehicle and its eccentricities, that way I can try to find the answers to problems that I may have prior to asking, but I was not able to find this one. Thanks for the info and Ill check it out today!

I drove my old 4runner like that for a while, I would also put money on the fan clutch. Annoying, but not the biggest deal just get it replaced if that's the cause.

As for the door lock, if the dealer is eating the cost, awesome. If they want you to spend a pretty penny on the whole actuator setup, consider replacing just the motor yourself for a few dollars. @jonharis hooked mine up, he may still have more motors available.

Sounds like you found a good score, enjoy it!

Leave the antenna down.
Leave the sunroof closed.
Replace the lock actuator motor yourself (<$20).
As others have mentioned, you probably also need a new fan clutch.

None of this stuff is a big deal. If you can get the dealer to fix the sunroof etc, then great.
If not, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, and just fix it yourself when you get a chance.

Welcome!

Let me throw this in here. Work as hard as you can to get the dealer to fix the sunroof. Contrary to the post just above mine ^ fixing the sunroof is a big deal. I have a non operable sunroof and it will be $700 for a new cassette as the cables that rust inside the guide tubes can't be replaced. FYI. Everything else, I completely agree with mars, no biggie

I'm gonna second Muddy, I have a large quote as well to fix my inoperable sunroof, it's a big deal. If they'll take care of it that'd be amazing. As for mine, :meh:, I have 6 other windows that do work.

Thanks everybody for the input! I took my car to a Landcruiser repair facility in the valley and, after checking the fan, determined that the clutch was bad, in that it was binding. I have already contacted the dealer because I purchased a two year warranty with the vehicle. My mechanic should be calling me soon about ordering the parts and having it taken care of through the aftermarket warranty. They all seem to think I got a pretty good car. I'm also going to order some new keys and program them according to the instructions listed on this forum (I only have one master key, and no others). On a different note, I have already applied leatherique conditioner and cleaner to the interior, but I think I need to reapply it due to it not making much of a difference. Looking forward to getting this Lancruiser as close to "new" condition as possible!

yep, still got em with a batch going out on Saturday! Link in my sig.

Congratulations on your Cruiser! Would you mind sharing where you went in the valley? (reply or PM) I'm in your neck of the woods and I'd like to line up an alternative to the dealership.

I third or fourth on the sunroof. $700-$900 is just parts I believe... I think it's a $1500-$2000 job at a dealer if the cables are broken or binding. Definitely ask them to help you out if the expectation was that it worked when you bought it.
