I've just bought an '96 80 with 97k miles. I got it in L.A. for $13k. I live between Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. so after getting a clean bill of health at the Toyota dealer in North Hollywood, I I-5ed it north for home. The truck was a joy to drive after 18 years and 200k in my old 60 series. So now comes the stage where I feel a constant and overwhelming need to accesorize. The PO was a slob, the truck was a complete pigsty inside, but it cleaned up well. Missing were the owners manual, a factory key, the alarm fob, floormats, and the key for the reciever hitch. I zipcut the reciever hitch lock and replaced it with the more conventional pin and cotter pin(at least in Canada it's more conventional), bought an owners manual and FSM, and ordered floor mats and a couple of keys. Reading through the old posts there seems to be a fairly general panning of the OEM security system. Could someone enlighten me as to why? What were the features? Is it worth buying another one? They are $69 at SOR plus exchange, duty and shipping for me with my anemic Northern Peso. What about programming? Do I have to go to the dealer? Also, what about the code for the stereo system, can I change that without knowing the original?(if, in fact the PO even installed a code) I've changed all my fluids, except the tranny, the knuckles look good(I'll probably pull them out next spring) and I can honestly say I haven't been this amped about a vehicle since I got my 60 many years ago. Thanks in advance, this is a great resource that I know I'll be checking often. Greg.
