I just bought a 2001 Tacoma (double cab; 4x2; TRD Off Road; 105k miles). I've been looking around for a while and finally took the plunge. I have a couple questions and hope they haven't been extensively answered in another post (I have not done a search-by-topic in the forum yet). Anyway, here it goes....

1. MUD is a GREAT forum. But, it seems like most of the topics are centered on the cruiser line. Does anyone recommend another good forum for me to use for discussing Tacoma topics? I've searched through a few recommended sites from Google searches, but the ones I reviewed didn't seem as friendly and professionally managed as the MUD site.

2. I know MPG is not going to be the best on an 01 Taco. But, what do other Taco owners do to maximize MPG for DD use? I use mine for DD and hauling the family to the beach on weekends.

3. What are some recommended "budget" mods for maximizing performance and getting the most from my truck. This is an open ended question, and I'm just curious what ya'll recommend.

I'm going to get out of the way so I can see your responses. Thanks in advance for your input.

mpg you say... well stick with a factory size tire or narrower for a lower rolling resistance, properly inflated, don't speed or accelerate hard, don't haul extra weight, etc..
Make sure the MAF sensor is clean, air cleaner clean, tuneup/timing right, running premium likely helps to prevent any buildup.
All logical stuff that I likely sound goofy to mention anyhow.
I think a box cover reduces drag as well to improve mileage. Heck chop it , lower it etc to reduce drag...
Maybe a silly question but do you have the 3.4L or can you get that in a 2.7L?
Performance and efficiency would sugget a low restriction exhaust and changing the air filter... I'm not a fan of changing out the intake air filter assembly for a K&N.. my preference is to stay OEM. Might be able to screw with the factory chip/computer but I assume one sacrifices emissions for power/efficiency here..
At any rate welcome to MUD and enjoy the Taco..good choice:cheers:

Duane,

Thanks for the reply and tips. I'm running the 3.4L and have a cap over the bed. I agree and hope it helps to reduce drag.

I just made a 200 mile trip and got 19 MPG 04 4x4 double cab with a shell.

x2 on TTORA, good site, lots of taco info

www.TTORA.com which is the Toyota Territory Off Road Association

www.YOTATECK.com which is another fine forum.

I sell my bumpers and offroad accessories from those sites as well. I offer member discounts to any of these sites.
