OK,

So now you guys have seen some pictures. I'll try to keep up dating them as I make progress and the truck starts to look different, although I don’t know if I want to alter it too much seeing as how it’s such a chick magnet. Anyway, I posted on a few forum boards as I was having trouble getting the truck to start. Turns out that the carburetor I was using was a bad rebuild and the Choke butterfly had been misaligned. So figuring that I would have other issues as well with that carburetor I swapped out the junk yard unit I have picked up a week or so ago. After that was all hooked up I fired the truck up and now it’s running good. I need to adjust the idle but starting and running is no longer a problem. Most likely the engine that is in the truck now will be removed because of bottom end noise. An engine rebuild may make a good winter 06-07 rebuild project.

As far as the igntion switch electrical that I wanted to change to a more permanent set up will have to wait. I plan on putting in a master kill switch so I don’t fry my electrical system if I sink the truck or if I want to disconnect the battery.

Jim As far as the Sparking problem goes. I put a Coil in it out of a 1984 truck. I ended up cleaning out all the jumper wires that were under the hood and have most things back to stock except for the above mentioned ignition switch.

Next on the to do list is make sure my power steering on the truck is good the reservoir and pump seem to be empty so I hope everything ends up to work ok. I will also probably start to reassemble the interior.

I'll keep you posted.

Well Guys,

This is what’s been happening recently..... I am not sure I mentioned it, but I picked up a set of tires on the Mud for sale board a few weeks back, they are BF Goodrich AT KO 315/75/r16. I figured 5 tires in good shape ( 4 about 60-65% and 1 new) for 270 was a deal shipped from CT. I was thinking that I could use the wheels I had gotten my brother a few years ago. I called him and he said they were mine for the taking. I figured great I have 5 wheels and tires for 270 bucks. Well after digging the wheels out of my parents barn, I found out I wasn’t so lucky. The wheels were in fact 16.5x9''. So this means it was time to go wheel shopping. After calling around on some prices for a 16x8’’ or a 16x10’’ wheel I figured out that a set of 5 was out of my price range. So I did what any other low budget truck builder would do, hit the junk yards! Saturday morning I stopped by one of my favorite yards, "Edison's Auto and Scrap". I found 5 stock Toyota Tundra Steel wheels 16x7’’. I got all 5 for 125 bucks. I had the tire guys at Edison's mount one of the tires to be sure it would work out for me. It ended up looking pretty good. Later that day I went up to see how the wheel would work on the truck. Below are some pictures of how it went.

I'll Post more in the days to come about the electrical work I did on Sunday.

Hey Jim,

So far so good.. The wheels seem to be clearing the Calipers and Tie rods. I drove the thing in and out of the garage and didnt feel any binding. I'm Not running spacers. Friday im going to get the rest of the wheels mounted and i'll take a closer look. As of right now I hope and think it's all good. Ps Edison's had a total of 8 of these things so there is at least 3 there.

Looks like a cool project. I am going to tag along as I have considered picking up a solid axled mini or 4runner to tinker on. (Similar budgets as well.)

Truck Progress:

I had posted that I would up date all you guys on the electrical work I had been doing on the truck. Last weekend with the help of Karl I installed a relay box with 3 relays. I also laid out the master interrupt switch and how to wire that. By master interrupt I mean a way to kill all the power in the truck if need be. After this out I focused on the 4 wires going to the stock carburetor as I was trying to figure out where they connect and if I needed to hook them to one of my new relays. In doing this I ended up having to peel back the wiring harness to locate the wires I needed to connect. I ended up finding about 8 other wires that were cut. I added this with all the wires that were cut under the dash and this made up some 12-16 wires that were no longer connected. After thinking about all the trouble shooting I would have to do if I had a short, or a wire was not connected I decided to just pull the wiring harness. As of last night I had the harness unwrapped on the floor of the shop and I have found where 5 of the cut wires go. So I’m going to continue Identifying and re connecting what I need. That will be this week’s task.

On a side note, while I was disconnecting the harness I broke the ignition tumbler and now I need a replacement. Looking back I realize I should have been more careful in pulling the harness. 23 year old plastic is rather brittle.

The wheels are awesome Jason. I'm going diving this weekend for some Elockers..wanna go Sunday?

I still have that old steering column with the ignition stuff in it...

Man, I've been all over Edisons, cantleys, U-wrench-it, etc. Never see any Cruisers, hardly ever see any 4wd minitrucks. When I do see a mini, it is an '86 w/ a 22R and an auto.

Hey Mark, I might be bad luck, but LMK where you're going Sunday and I might meet you there. I have tools and dismantling skillz. Maybe if I go along w/ you and jason I'll find the 16" wheels and FJ80 E-locker.

Noon on Sunday how does that sound?

I'm looking for Elockers and a Wiring Harness from a 93-95 4wd/2wd Truck or Runna...

Heck, I didn't think ANY yards were open on Sunday's anymore! Most aren't even open on Saturday's now...

Have you tried searching the yards via www.car-part.com for diff locks? I know it's not gonna show everything but might help narrow things down a bit.

Nick

U Wrench it is where I was going to go first simply because I can call around and ask the other yards what's on the lot and can't with U Wrench..

I'll try them on Sunday and see what happens.

AAAAHH! My thread has been hijacked.

Anyway, as of last night I figured out where all the wires from my pollution control computer go. Unfortunately some of the components they lead to are missing. I also figured that the truck was running with out the computer because its power feed was cut. I’m going to try to hook everything back up and see if it works. Hopefully this will get the 3 parts of the carb that I need hooked up to work properly. I'm concerned that with the missing components the computer won't operate the rest of the system correctly. Though this might not matter because of how simplistic the computer itself is. After that is complete I am going to figure out what all the other cut wires do, and where they are supposed to go.

In other truck news I have a lead on a w56 and dual case set up for pretty cheap. I'll let you guys know how this goes.

Ps... I'll take some picuters of my wire mess thursday.

Pictures of my wirring mess !

Well I spent 8 hours this last weekend dealing with this. I'm almost ready to close it up , i just have to figure out the former air conditioning and heater wires.

SNAFU

Well, this week hasn't gone exactly as planned. I haven’t gotten much of the wiring done that I wanted. I don’t really have much to finish but I broke my soldering iron and had to get another one. I know this shouldn't have been a big deal but I hate buying low quality tools and after looking at the major stores Sears, Lowe’s and Home Depot all I could find were cheapo irons. So I looked on line and found what I wanted now I’m waiting for it to come in. In the mean time I figured I might as well get the rest of my tires on the truck. So After having the tires mounted on the wheels I headed up to the shop to put them on the truck. (On a side note if anyone needs tires mounted and balanced for cheap head on over to Bill’s Used Tire on Sullivant. They mounted four and balanced all five for 36 bucks.) Well everything was going good at the shop till I put the rear tires on the truck. If you remember the picture I posted it showed a tire on the front passenger side. I figured my clearance issues would only be on the front so I didn’t bother to test the rest of the truck. What a dumb idea that was. It turns out that the tires are to close to the frame in the back and rub on the spring packs. Luckily I have a source for IFS rear housing for $50 that should eliminate this problem. So looks like Saturday I’ll be going to pick up “new” rear axle. Then finish off the wiring and get it back in the truck. I’ll let you guys know how this all goes.
