Found this while surfing the interwebs. Seems to be legitimate. I found it interesting comparing pricing between Landcrusier models of the same year. To me the most desirable Landcruiser is the heavy duty 70 series, and ironically it was the cheapest series in Japan. Cheaper even than a Prado. Yet in Canada the heavy duty 70's have the highest re-sale value.

Seems like they have other manufacturers too. Pretty neat data.

One of those sites was how I ended up with my BJ74. Yards and yards full of diesel Cruisers..

I wasn't suggesting this site was a way to find a cruiser for someone. I just thought it was cool how they had the original Toyota MSRP prices for the Japanese Landcruisers. It's neat to see what they cost new.

Thanks for the link, I have lots of family in Canada, but live in the States. I have googled about importing, but finding someone who is reputable seems to be a needle in the haystack. I was curious if people have imported who they used and what the process it was, but I'm hijacking your thread which I didn't mean to do, sorry.

You gotta take a punt NGray. I did, still got lied to but now I have a 100 000km BJ74 LX with everything except cable lockers. All for a piddly little $14k. Despite the bull**** I'd do it again.

Importing can be a crapshoot, especially if you don't do your homework however for many of us it is still the best option to obtain the ever elusive 70 Series. The weak U.S. dollar is also complicating the process.

1990 LJ78 - The Poor Man's Cruiser - sold

I just realized, according to the links I posted, your Prado was actually the Rich Man's Cruiser. :D More expensive than the same year HD 70 series cruisers.

"Poor Man's Cruiser" was actually a phrase coined by "Crushers" in his never ending desire to point out what an idiot I was for buying the thing in the first place. :D

I know; just giving you a hard time. In Canada they really are the poor mans cruiser these days, as they have depreciated more than the others thanks to the failure prone 2lte.

However, I must admit I was actually under the impression that the LJ78 was a step down from the heavy duty 70's even when new. I was really surprised to see that they were more expensive at the time.

I have only seen one LJ78 personally and have never seen a 76 or 77 Series however the LJ78 is actually a very nice vehicle in my opinion ... the engine being the only deduction. In the proper setting I could easily see why they would be very desirable. .... and no I am not under the influence of alcohol. :D

1978HJ45 I agree - I had a distant cousin once, an RJ70. The idea that the LD running gear is too weak is in itself too weak. Unless you're doing this every single day they won't break in a hurry. Damn I love those coils! Swap in a 13B-T and a lift and you'd have a very nice Landcruiser.

True, much of the running gear is based on Hilux parts and we know what a beating they can take.
I guess the main beneifit of the heavy duty parts is they can take heavy loads off road and keep going for years.

I actually enjoyed driving they LJ78 despite being paranoid about the engine. I obviously did not like the lack of power and having to concentrate on various "temperature" gauges but the vehicle itself was very comfortable. An engine transplant would yield a great Cruiser.:)
The only other issue with owning a LJ78 in the States ( where seeing a 70 Series is akin to seeing Bigfoot) is having people mistake it for an Isuzu or Mitsubishi.

You guys are carrying out this conversation as if kzj78 never existed. Kz3.0 was in my opinion the best Diesel engine I owned. I like the hz too, but I like the idea of going 0-60 sometime today not tomorrow and having coils also

I agree actually. I'd like to get my hands on a kzj78 one of these days. I've released decent power out of my 2lte, but I know the 1kz has a lot more to offer, and less chance of head problems. I'll wait until the imported units devalue a bit here, and then take my pick.

I have yet to hear about head problems with the kz it is a really smooth powerfull little engine which also consumes 10-11liters per every 100kms(up to 15 when its really cold). Starts right up at -35C.

Are those prices for real? They are expensive.

The prices are when the land cruisers were brand new in Japan (MSRP = manufacturers suggested retail price).

Also, they are in Japanese Yen. You have to use a currency converter to figure out the equivalent in your own currency. Inflation also plays a role for the older models.
