hi everyone

i'm currently living in malta (southern europe) and i have a japanese import 1993 lj71 land cruiser (jdm spec -- malta drives on the left like the UK!). i have been trying to get it through the vrt (vehicle roadworthy test).

after failing the test due to "lack of braking power", it appears that the master brake cylinder is shot. i have been unable to source a replacement and the official toyota dealer tells me that these parts are no longer available. i have tried various japanese parts importers and breakers but it seems like none exist anywhere!

the british version of this truck has rear drum brakes whilst mine has rear discs, meaning that (as i understand it) the uk version of this part is no use to me.

at this point, my cruiser is sitting in a garage and looks unlikely to ever get back on the road :(

the oem part i require is: cylinder sub-assy, brake master 47201-60430

i can't find any 3rd party alternative to this part, but i'm no expert. is there any information that may help me source a part, perhaps someone knows of a alternative replacement part, or some japanese part stockist or some "trick" (eg. modifying another model's part) that may resolve my problem.

the truck is in great condition with no rust and the interior is great. i would love to keep this truck running. maybe one day replace the 2.4 2LTE with a 3litre KZ engine too! but for now, just getting back on the road is the goal.

thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How about the master cylinder off one of the later model 74 series? They had disc brakes all round, probably the same as the LJ71. Landcruiser (& likely other Toyota trucks etc) master cylinders are mostly interchangeable in my experience, so if you find one that is the right diameter there's a good chance it will bolt on & work. The cylinder diameter is usually printed on the side of the casting in inches. Another alternative is to try a rebuild kit from a similar vehicle with the same dia master cyl.

Cheers
Clint

thanks for the replies guys,

you've given me some hope! i did find amayama but it didn't seem promising to me (i guess due to their website not being very flashy and a bit sparse on info!). i think amayama will be the "easiest" way to resolve this asap! thanks for the help, i post an update when i get further.

just to wrap this thread up, the part "cylinder sub-assy, brake master 47201-60430" is no longer available from Toyota or Amayama, or anywhere i checked (Niparts, etc).

luckily, my local 4x4 garage managed to fit a master cylinder from a Hilux... so i'm almost back on the road.

thanks

I was going to say that I ran in to this with my 71. It is the same at a 89-93? Toyota Pickup.

If you run in to issues with the slave cylinder you might check the same truck or Toyota Forklifts. (You read that correctly).
