So at the dec. meeting, there was a discussion on HOW us lay people could possibly be able to volunteer , when the need arises, to help in search and rescue efforts, as Will (desertlake) had.
Rusty came up w/ the idea of asking 24hrsnevada (Jeremy) to come speak on this topic, as a number of us expressed interest in doing this for the community.
I texted Jeremy and he AGREED to come talk to us about this at our Jan. meeting!!

Lets have a good turn out for him, shall we?!

Keith,

We did something similar at one of our past meetings. We invited a rep from the local S&R to give us a talk on this process and it was extremely informative.

We learned lots of good info, including the Good Samaritan law, which is leveraged upon heavily for this activity. The local S&R group wanted 4x4 clubs to help with the extraction of people who are immobilized. The nice lady explicitly told us that vehicle extraction is not in the scope of a typical S&R operation, to which there was a collective sigh from our group. Apparently, we prefer to extract the stuck rigs and the folks!!

Most of the 4x4 crowd know first aid and some have wilderness first aid training already. We use HAM for comm so we're pretty much set to go from that standpoint, according to the speaker. We just needed to join a group so that we can acquire further training in S&R operations as well as learn the legal aspect of this type of activity.

Ali,
This was the general thought among the group was that we were "uniquely qualified" for this type of volunteer work. It's also a good opportunity to help the community and help boost the reputation of the wheeling community.
Thanks for sharing the experience. Looking forward to Jeremy's talk on this.

^^^What he said.

I will absolutely be there!

I just realized that I WON'T be able to make this meeting.
My grandmas health is failing and I need to get home.

Bummed, but gotta go!!

Sorry to hear that Keith best of luck man!

Family first! I'm sure that Jereme will be happy to fill you in on the details when you get back. In the meantime I'll keep you and your grandmother in my thoughts and prayers Keith.

Sorry to hear this Keith, this has been a hard year for people. If you need anything let me know.

I'm more than willing to postpone this until your return. Just say the word.
