Sunday morning, Darcie and I decided that we wanted to see Fordyce and we figured we could see the eclipse as well. The original plan was to drive into Meadow Lake and hike down the the last river crossing. As they say, best laid plans...

We drove up 89 and made the turn to head up toward Meadow Lake. We crossed a few snow drifts and then we hit the big one. Up to this point the drifts were pretty small and we eased right over them. I got to the big one and decided it would be wise to scout it out. This drift kept going and going. It lasted at least a 1/2 mile and was too much to risk. I orignally pulled up on the drift and decided to back down. Ours were the only truck tracks we saw up to that point. Everything else was quad tracks.

Not wanting to call it quits and figuring anywhere else we tried in that area would have us into the snow again, so what to do??? We still wanted to see/hike Fordyce, so we heading back to the highway and to 80 and over the summit to the Eagle Lakes turnoff. I figured we could make it a ways on the trail, find a place to camp and hike to the first river crossing. We drove in and met a few rigs coming out here and there. We finally met our match at about the 2.5 mile mark, which is just this side of the "Driveline Hill." We found a decent spot and parked the truck.

The obstacle that stopped us.

Working our way down the trail (these are actually on the way out on Monday morning).

Little tight here and there.

We have driven Fordyce many times, but this is the first time we have hiked it and I have to say, it gave it a whole new feel. We saw a lot more wildlife.

Starting with a little garter snake (didn't get a picture), then a small "tree frog:"

And more lizards than we could count. Because it was a Sunday afternoon and the river was flowing over 500CFM (according to some of the guys we talked to), we had the trail to ourselves for the most part.

Waterfall in the distance.

The water flow at the river.

And camp.

The hike was a little over four miles round trip and was absolutely awesome for the views and weather.

Didn't test the sliders which was good for me.

I didn't see any obstacle there!?
That river looks amazing!! Nice and clear and probably loaded w/ fish to catch!!

Nice pics and write up!!!

Great write up and pictures Jack and Darcy. You two have a truckload of fun together. The truck is looking good with the new bumper and skids. Plus no skeetters with the new camper!

Kieth the obstical that would have stopped him is around the corner on the right(I think) rock face about the size of a large trunk--would have use the new steps for sure.

Love this trail. Hiking it isn't easy tho. Bet it got your blood :opumping on some of those hills. Seems to me, just driving it there are quite a few ups and down.

Looks like about two weeks before that snow is gone. Can't wait!! Hopefully will be running it twice this year and with sierra trek night run. They serve margaritas at winch hill #5 if you make it:cheers::steer::clap::beer:I just ate the tacos and beans:whoops:.It was 2:00 am. I had a french horn symphony in my tent. Can't quite rival the tuba one that Mr Rusty can compose.

Nice Jack! How were the bugs?

Like Krusty said, it wasn't so much that obstacle as the one just past it (actually two, the drop of, ledge after and of course "driveline" hill.

Less snow than when you went in JULY last year!

Yeah, we made it further this year than last. Did not expect that much snow to still be up there.

We try and thanks. Yeah, that is one of the great things about the camper, when the bugs are out, we are in.

Actually it ended up being one of the best hikes we have done in a while. But yeah, we felt it.

I don't know why you guys don't do more day runs into and back out from the first river crossing. You can be on the trail in an hour and it gives you plenty of entertainment. Darcie and I both really, really like and miss Fordyce. It is just one of our favorite trails ever.

Nice Jack! How were the bugs?

Thank you, actually not too bad at all. Didn't need any bug spray while hiking and only a little bit at camp sitting around. I was suprised and very happy about it.

Time for another crawler!!! :) just sayin!
I was just givin ya some crap on that obstacle pic!! I've never done the trail, so I have no idea what's what up there!! Hoping that changes this year!!

Jack which trail did you hike grouse ridge or beyers...or another? BTW, nice write-up.

I think it is grouse ridge, not sure, I just know where I am going, so I don't really pay that much attention to the names. I do know that as you leave the staging area and get on the trail, you come to a fork and I stay to the right for Fordyce. I have never taken the left.

Yeah, that's probably not going to happen any time soon. Have some other stuff to take care of before any other projects can be started.

I didn't think you had done Fordyce. Like I said in my other post, you can be on the trail in an hour from Reno and even if you wheel into the first river crossing and back out, you get your money's worth. It can be done in less than a day and if there are any problems, it's fairly easy for someone to rescue you/bring parts. Great day of wheeling. We used to do it all the time when the water was high.

Actually we could probably do the trail to the Corporate crossing bail out in a day if the group was small.

And with 2-3 well built rigs, you can wheel from beginning to end (Meadow Lake) in a day. Used to do it all the time. Much more than that or if there are any problems, it will take longer.

Didn't even know about the "cutout" until much later, we always thought Meadow Lake was the end and there was only one way in and out.

We would leave Reno at 6am, on the trail airing down by 7am and home usually between 5-6pm. Didn't really hurry, just moved at a steady pace and had time to enjoy ourselves. We didn't stop on every obstacle, take a few flex shots of each other (that look like the other trophy shots we had taken many times before), talk to each other for 20 minutes on each winch hill/obstacle, etc. You know the things that really take time on a trail run.

Because of how close it is, we ended up running Fordyce more than we ran Rubicon. Of course it is all dependant upon the water flow. I've crossed in the 400-450cfm range, and it was scary. I wouldn't do much more than that. Crossing two is the worst/deepest/swiftest/scariest.

When Shawn Andy P and I ran it we could easily have finished the whole trail and either camped at Meadows Lake or pushed on home.
But the "good" camp spot was empty when we got there, so we stayed the night. I love sleeping next to the waterfall, even though I know it's a lot colder than camping further from the river.

Im down for a day run up there!
Thatll give me a good view of what it's about.

I miss Fordyce more than the Rubicon as well.

This coming weekend is the holiday so it might be crowded. Maybe Sat 6/2? I'll have to clear it with the planning committee first but Joe and I should be able to go.

My new rubber showed up this week and I'm ready for a test.:bounce::bounce2:
