The 80 is breathing again!
My six month long head rebuild is over. Got her started up last Sunday, but it was struggled. Ironed out some of the kinks (thanks Molly!) and finished the timing tonight. Drove to the gas station and put in the high grade to try and offset the six month old fuel in the system. Drove for about twenty minutes and it was great. I need to adjust to the twenty year difference in automotive technology. My transition from the 40 to the 80 will be eventful. I think my favorite so far is the power steering :D

I want to thank Onur for his help. There was a lot of work that I could not have done without him. I also want to thank Ali for being the brains of the operation. That guy is smart. Thanks to Dan for having the patience and stock to back my last minute purchases. Also Mr. Beo, thank you for the troubleshooting and the FSM. And my good friend James for the Toyota tech smarts. I might have neglected someone, if so I'm sorry. It is very relieving to have the beast back on the street!

Rory,
This is good to hear! I guess you got the issue with the injector sorted out?
-Mike-

believe it or not there was never an injector issue. I had them tested and cleaned and the suspect injector passed initial testing and after cleaning had a very little gain. I think it was all HG.

I am certain that this picture shows coolant in the oil passage (oil passage that is right above the engine mount)

Whoah!

Epic.

Happy to hear this news indeed (as are Ali, Beo, and Dan!!)...no more late night phone calls, and afterwork at midnight parts deliveries/wrenching sessions...!!!

;) ;p :grinpimp: :bounce: :bounce2:

So I assume Pismo is on then brother?

Also, when will the manport be free for me to bring my truck over. I've got a ton of parts to start adding to my 80 so people stop making fun of it... :)

Talk to you tomorrow.

I put some good miles on the truck today. Freeway and all. The truck was amazing. Without the hood the water temp topped at 184. I had the truck idling with the AC on for a good 20 mins, and did not have any overheating issues. Had the truck up to 75 on I-25 and again nothing to worry about. The Scangauge is an amazing tool, I can watch all my temps, Rpms and real MPH on a little digital screen. If you have ODB II this is a tool you should have.

Took the truck for a little jog up to Santa Fe last night. Here are the numbers from Santa back to ABQ:

62MPH average
15.5MPG average
3.6 gallons used
191F Max Water Temp
55.4 Miles driven

With my old 80 and using the Scangauge, I discovered the minimum mpg with the torque converter locked up in high gear was 13 point something (I forget exactly, but between 13 and 14). On a two way run from Cuba to Bloomfield, with the help of a radar detector (for those downhills) I was able to average 15.0 mpg at 75 mph. It took very ginger use of the throttle, but it can be done...

The rebuild cost me approx:
$1,100 in parts and $600.00 on services (radiator clean up, injector service and valve job)

Luckily the labor costs were low. Beer is still relatively cheap :D

Also one of the lessons I learned during the project was:
Do not buy another Landcruiser because one is down.

I could of had more motivation if it wasn't for the 40.

Great news Rory! Looking forward to seeing you and your 80 on the trails again.

Moab this weekend? I'm vaguely remembering that you're out because of work.

Awesome dude, glad you're back on the road. Admit it, you enjoyed it in some sadistic way :D

I was so close...

It looks like I did not seat the #4 injector correctly so I have a fuel leak between the injector and the fuel rail

A slight exhaust leak from the rear manifold (I just need to tighten the bolts)

and last but not least water dripping from the thermostat housing...

I guess it is true, the work never stops :frown:

The last 2 are easy. The #4 injector is gonna be a biatch. :frown:

I guess it is true, the work never stops.

True. I have a huge respect for mechanics that do this all day long. I can't seem to do any project without taking 2x or 10x as long as "book." Then there is always something.... I replaced an alternator yesterday on one of our cars. Jacked it up, pulled the alternator, put in a reman'd, new serp belt, installed and checked everything, then buttoned it up, took it for a test drive, and cleaned up the tools .

Over in the corner is a piece of plastic ducting that was supposed to go back in the bowels. It will have to sit on the workbench until the next time that darn under-body plastic cover thingie comes back off. :frown:
