I recently removed the entirety of my A/C system to replace o rings and convert. The system is currently empty and I reinstalled the compressor to get the truck up and running while I was waiting to get some new lines made. While on a short drive I noticed a squelling noise coming from the engine bay and upon inspection noticed the A/C clutch was intermittently rotating with the pulley. There is no power going to the compressor in any way.

Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this?

Is the bearing seizing? If it is, you can replace the bearing.

Hello,

It might sound obvious, but the v-belt may be loose. Checking the tension is a good starting point.

A little grease on the bearing can help as well.

The magnetic clutch plays this trick when it is not properly lubricated.

Hope this helps.

Is there an "air gap" between the the clutch and the face of the pulley? If you replaced the compressor shaft seal maybe you lost a shim. Should be approx. 1mm (don't know the spec.) gap.

My A/C clutch pulley seized up earlier this year (bad bearing). Thanks to @beno for helping me that day cutting the belt off.

NACHI bearing P/N: 40BGS12DS is what the clutch pulley uses on my Denso unit. No idea if that works for others.

Dang. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I'll see if I got time to check it out this weekend otherwise gonna have to wait another week for another work trip.

Loose belt could be it. I installed see belts recently and have not gone back and retightened them after they've broken in.

I didn't do anything to the compressor besides remove and drain the old oil out before reinstalling.

Finally got a chance to check the compressor out. I replaced the bearing and there were 2 shims but there is still no gap. Parts manual show 3 different size shims

Does anyone know where to get the shims i tried ordering but they show discontinued everywhere.

On a side note beneath the hub was a small piece of felt and thin metal in between the bearing?
