I've seen alot of trailer builds on here and it inspired me to find one. I found this M101 through a friend of a friend. I was told it has one rust spot and is easily repairable.

My plans would be to fix spot, repaint and use it for family outings, camping trips, etc. The extra space would be nice since, I have two boys 5 and 3. I would add a RTT and eventually I would like to make it into an expedition style trailer.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you sure want the US 101? Most people seem go for the Canadian M101.

I'm able to get this one for $450 and it seems the M416/CDN 101 are close to double the price. I thought the extra room would be nice b/c I will also use it as a utility trailer. It has good tires and also includes the spare.

You can usually get these pretty cheap, but they are very heavy. It all depends what you want it for and if the weight isn't an issue.

as long as weight isnt a big issue then it would be fine for what you are saying. Keep in mind that the weight it is NOW is without any gear or mods to it. i realize that may sound like i am stating the obvious, but sometimes people dont realize how quickly gear weight adds up. i used the weight of the US101 trailer as a "ceiling" in designing my trailer when fully loaded.

Also, if you plan to do any rock-crawling or extreme off-roading it might be a little fat.

That being said, if you are not concerned with either of those two factors, then you should be good to go. I'd love to see a US101 made into an expedition trailer.

I don't know if you have seen it in person but it is pretty darn big/heavy trailer.

The M416 isn't real big but it should meet the needs you described and you can even move it around by yourself (unloaded).

That trailer is an M101-A1, which weighs around 1350 lbs empty. I have one and it is a very capable utility trailer but I wouldn't drag it around on the trail. THis trailer has dumping capability as well. It is rated as a 3/4 ton trailer but easily hauls 2500 lb loads.

Lots of info on this trailer here:

I knew it was a heavy trailer but not having much luck finding a M416 or M100 in the St. Louis area. There is one M416 for $1100 in Kansas which I thought was kind of high but looks nice and says there is only some surface rust in the bed. I found one other for $700 and he said is needs to be sand blasted but no rust all the through anywhere.

I was really hoping to pick one up for about $500 but I don't think that is going to happen.

Should I keep looking and hope to find one eventually or buy one of these?

Those m101 us versions are way heavy. I would hold out, or build a trailer from scratch. If you dont have time or skills, have a fab shop price it out for you.

x2.

You might also consider the vato 'mini-truck bed' trailer conversion... :hmm:

The US M101 was made to be pulled behind the HUMVEE. It will be wider than your 100. I used these in the Military and they are great trail trailers as long as you have the power to pull them and the trails are not tight. If you are weeling in hilly terrain it will tax your 100. If you are on large trails they are great. I have a M101CDN and I feel that you would be alot happier with it if you are towing it while weeling. US M101 would be great as a trail tow in, drop off / base station / camp site. You would basically have a cool trail camper. I would love to see somebody build an A/T out of one also.
You also need to think about the trailer weight in relation to mud / sand. They are a pain in the a** to try and recover one. The weight will also add alot of resistance to your 100 the mud / sand and cause you to loose traction. Your 100 is not near as heavy as a HUMVEE. HUMVEE has the vehicle weight / clearance to keep better traction. Having said all that HUMVEE's suck and LC's RULE.

Thanks for all the replies! I've started looking for a M416 but it looks like at least $1000.

Keep your eyes open and be ready to pounce if you find a good deal. I found an M416 in good shape for $350 on CraigsList a few weeks ago and bought it that night.
