is this a diesel ignition switch?

may seem like a stupid question, but i bought a half working '83 BJ60 with the intention of giving it some care, and i started into the glow plug circuit and ignition switch that dont really work and im wondering if its because i have an ignition switch from a gasser in it. im a beginner here so is the switch supposed to have a glow setting or is that just supposed to be in with the on. the plug in the last picture looks like the one out of a gas truck. i did a continuity test from the 1980 FSM and it worked like a gas switch and not a diesel. is there anything different between the ignition switch between 1980 and 83 or did someone before me put either a diesel engine in a gas truck or a gas ignition in a diesel truck. also is there anything i can do to make this switch work for me? maybe just wire up a manual glow? thanks guys

looks the same as my bj70 ign switch. the way the glow system works on mine, is you turn the key to on, wait a few seconds for the glow cycle to go, then start.

Some older ones had a glow position on the switch, my old bj40 had it, and maybe some old bj60's.

It's easy to hook up a manual glow switch, I quite liked that system on my old 40 over the newer " automatic " system.

Considering that year of 60 series, I think you may have a gasser ignition switch in place. There are two parts - the lock cylinder/barrel, which should have a 'G' (for "Glow"). The other part is the electrical switch itself, illustrated in your second picture. That needs to match to the ignition barrel positions, which vary between gassers and diesels.

I had this problem on my truck when I put a new ignition barrel and switch in place (I have a 60 series column). The ignition barrel was correct, with the 'G' position clearly indicated before 'ST' ("start"), but the switch I got turned out to be only for gas engine models, and there was no way I could get the ignition to work properly. While I could get the engine to crank, it wouldn't glow properly, and wouldn't glow while the engine cranked.

If you take a look on my build thread, linked in my sig. line below, you can find more information on this. First check page 15, post #431 for a picture of the correct ignition barrel (for BJ/HJ60 1981); then take a look at page 31, post #918 for a comparison of the two ignition switches.

hopefully, in your case it's only the ignition barrel that is wrong, since that part can still be sourced. If it's the switch as well, then you will have to find one (used) since they are no longer available from Toyota, as best as I could determine.

Good luck!

Yes ,that is what I did
When the red dash lights come on ,I press a button for 10 seconds cold. I think I used a wire from the old alternator

I did a manual glow switch for the FJ55 when I installed a 3B diesel into it. You'll need to be a little careful as the '83 originally came with the "Superglow" system which is different than 12volt direct to the glow plugs.

That's right about the 1983 trucks having Superglow - my earlier comments should be disregarded. I'm not sure if your ignition barrel is correct or not.

A manual glow system is easy enough to rig up; since your truck has Superglow, you would need to change out your 6v glow plugs for 10.5 volt plugs. You would also need to disconnect the glow resistor and current sensor from the intake manifold, and run the power from the primary glow relay directly to the glow plug common current bar.

it probably is the right ign switch, I think it's just a standard one, like any gassers.

the on position fires off the superglow system, so it doesn't really need an extra spot for glow.

Guessing that means the superglow isn't working? then yeah, any old push button switch will work, you might be able to re-use your present glow relay with a switch, depending which of the parts of the glow system isn't working....

right on, thanks guys. looks like ill probably just wire up a switch. would i just go from a 12V source to the switch then to the relay? ill look around for other threads, im sure theres a few that go through this. thanks again

There's no good way to test the ignition switch, huh? I suspect mine is causing my EDIC and starter issues. See post #298 (last photo) and 299 for details regarding the issues I am experiencing. https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-...ion-birth-hj62-tofudebeest-6.html#post3853152

I have a stock 62 ign barrel and switch with a dash manual glow button. Sheila (out of which the 2H came) had the barrel with a G on it, but I opted to go the manual button route for many pragmatic reasons, mostly wiring-related and which harness I ultimately chose to use (the gasser's).

If was me .. I do the same route in a blink. Fact when my EDIC, glow stuff start messing and driving me nuts .. I wil go with this simple route.
