Is there a swing out tire carrier that allows you to open hatch?

I am building a rear bumper with a swing out tire carrier. I was wondering if there are any designs that still allow the rear hatch to be opened without moving the tire out of the way. Would angling the tire down or mounting it further out look stupid?

Anybody have any pictures?

It would probably look rather stupid if it was just an empty space. However, if you were to design it to hold a cooler basket behind the tire, then it may look great.

I always wondered if a rear tire carrier bolted to the top hatch with some seriously upgraded struts could work... might need upgraded latch as well. Upgraded sheet metal... upgraded ___

If you could have a release on your bumper-mount that pivoted off the bottom, moving the top back to allow hatch clearance, that would sure be cool. Some real engineering challenges in there though, especially in the moving parts to handle trail abuse and vibration.

Sounds like you'd be better off with some EMU Wings. They replace the rear pop out windows with lockable, flip up panels (glass or metal). Makes accessing things in the rear cabin a breeze when you have swingout bumpers attached.

/\ beat me to it. My concept is inspired by those crazy tailgates than can open down AND sideways. Handle at the top of tire for human factors, pull to release. Shouldn't be too hard to do. There's tons of strong latches out there, and the bolts/bearings it hinged on would hold the vast majority of the weight in the up position. You'd probably want some struts to help it lower without killing you though. haha

Here is what I have built so far. This is all made with steel from the drop pile I have from other jobs.

Angled just enough to open the hatch.

If that’s all you need angle wise, put a second pivot on the vertical that the tire mounts that allows the tire to rotate backwards. Take a second piece of metal, c cannel that fits around that vertical piece. Drill a hole for a pivot, just below the level of the license plate and a second hole at the top for a pin or latch.

Thanks for the suggestions. I mocked it up a few different ways and couldn't find a way I thought looked good so I just mounted it. I will just have to swing the tire out of the way.

hmmm. That's a lot of work. Not to overstate the obvious, but what is your objective for being able to "open the hatch with the tire still in position?" It seems that your access to all but a small portion of the rear cargo area is going to be limited, and you'll be brushing up against a dirty tire/holder all the time. It may work for grabbing small, strategically pre-placed items, but not for general access? If you're going to have to swing the tire out/down for ____% of the tasks/access that you need anyway, is it worth brushing up against a tire for the 1-____% times? Or are you going to end up just swinging the dang thing out of the way anyway most all of the time?

Yeah, I thought about all that too. Everything was a whole lot easier just mounting it in my way. It isn't too much of a pain to move out of the way.
