Is there a good skinny 33" tire out there for 18" wheels...?

didn't see an obvious answer out there yet.

My wife's truck has 18" wheels. We're getting close to the end of the Nitto TGs. I would like to suggest to her a skinny (as in 255 / 10") 33" diameter tire in A/T style. But is there even such a thing out there, let alone a good one? I know there are plenty of 285s 33" but I really would like to go skinny this time around. Unfortunately, I imagine that skinny and 18" do not typically go together.

Any MUD expert opinion?

(Or anybody wants to swap 18" wheels for 16" (if she could be convinced - not obvious)? I guess there is probably even less choice in 17" wheel tires so the 17" wheels may not be a better way to go.)

Lots of choices in 275/70-18. I don't think I'd go any skinnier on a 8" wide wheel.

yes, lots of those. also 265/70 but less of the offroad types.

I'm very much tempted to try 255s. Then again, this only leaves about 1" outward on each side of an 8" wheel.... mmm..... good point... I'll see if I can talk to a tech at some big tire company...

crusrdug has some pics of his 275/70-18's. With 255's, you'll have about 1/2" on each side since an 8" wheel is actually 9" wide when you include the flanges.

The tech will tell you 255 will be fine on an 8" wheel because it's within the approved width. But that approval is also at recommended inflation pressure.

that is the size i run.. love them!

I ran 255/70r18s on my old Hundy. They looked perfect and were the right width for me though hard to get in an aggressive tread.

that would be about 32" I would think.
tad smaller than I'd like but a possibility.
what brand?

Here's my experience with skinny tires (235 85 16 Mud Terrain TA). I've got 15k miles so far on them, and they have been great. Traction is amazing in terrain in which narrower tires are preferable. I have scraped the rims a few times because there is not much sidewall to protect the rim. Other than that, and that the skinny tires look kind of goofy, I am happy with them.

how do they do in sand?

I have not yet aired them down for proper sand driving. But aired up, they are (obviously) not that great. Aired up, as long as you have some momentum, high rpms, and a low gear, you can get through. I have not got stuck (yet) on either beach sand or desert wash sand, but got close.

I have too many bad memories of digging out prior vehicles from sand, and don't want to go there again.
