I have a 30 ft fith wheel for when :princess: goes camping and I built ( almost finished but using it already) a tear drop for when I go by myself (me time) but I wanted to build a exp. trailer up for off the beaten path ,but all of the rtt seem to cost a fortune. are there any cheaper ones out there anywhere? or has anyone used a regular dome tent and mounted it?

there was a thread a while back where someone made a fold out lid, where they mounted a standard floor dome tent....looked pretty slick.

RTT's well...they can range from 600ish up to a couple grand. you get what you pay for..and these things generally arent cheap. #1: they're built and thus sealed much better than your standard ground tent. 2: they've got integrated frames that open up to creat the walls/structure.

why not just make the teardrop off-roadable... ?

I guess I could, but it would take a bit of modifying. Really just wanted to build one though. tear drop still has creature comforts like a fridge A/C 12v color tv and such. great for when I go to one of the COE parks where they have power to do some weekend getaway fishing. Still not done but you get the idea. Me and my son tried it out at a local park.

what's "affordable" to you?

some RTTs can be found on the used-tent-market for around $400 -- I've seen used 1st generation Mombasa tents for about that price.

other makes/models tend to be higher-end in the price range, but they also tend to be higher in quality.

I've got one of the older Mombasas and have used the hell out of it. It has been a pleasure to town for camping trips in rough terrain. You can get them used for a few hundred, but that's not cheap either.

That teardrop camper might do better than you'd think off road with an upgraded axle, leafs, and tires though.
