Is it a factory alarm or not?

Hey all,

I just picked up a '97 FJ80...thing is I bought from a shop that had it in for repairs, they pulled the motor, blah blah blah. They have no clue about anything with respect to the truck.

So I put humpty Dumpty back together and when I first fired it up the alarm was going bonkers. It sounds through the factory horn, has a hood release pin switch mounted to the fire wall...locks the doors after the truck is running and then only unlocks the driver door when shut off...and lastly the LED also appears to be the valet switch...you can push it in and out. I bought a Toyota remote but I can't seem to get it to program. The control box for the remote is mounted to the cruise control box in the left kick panel area. Okay....that's a mouthful.

Anyone have a clue if this is a factory alarm? The images you see of the LED having a emblem that says Toyota Security is not in my truck.

I fear that it's aftermarket!

Any help is most appreciated.

Jason

Jason,

It doesn't sound factory although as I understand it the "factory" alarms aren't really factory either as they were port installed...

Anyway, on both my '97 LX and '97 FZJ80 the alarm control box is under the DS seat. Both rigs have the "Toyota" security dealyo with the mic and LED in the dash above the radio.

Others have found the control box elsewhere but I believe most have found that they were not the "factory" boxes...

The other thing is that there are different color fobs for differing years (thread out there on this). IIRC the '96 & '97 (and maybe '95) model years work only with the black key fobs despite the fact that the FCC IDs match. I found this out the hard way  The other model years only work with the gray fobs.

Also, a LX450 key fob will work just fine with a '96 & '97 FZJ80 and vice versa. I have the second button (bottom one) on both of my '97 LX key fobs programmed to my '97 FZJ80 and vice versa. Comes in handy ;)

There are a lot of threads if you search...Here are some links:

MUD search using alarm, key, and fob

Alarm thread showing a different box and location...RAV4 box

Good luck

I've got the same alarm. It sucks. I'll monitor to see what you find out.

I hate it.

That is not the RS3000 alarm that was the port-installed optional alarm on Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) USA vehicles in '97. TMS is one of 3 distributors; Gulf States Toyota (GST) used various alarm systems throughout the production of the 80s and we have seen several different alarms in their trucks.

So basically, it could be an alarm that was supplied by the dealer/distributor when your truck was new.... or, it could be aftermarket.

I have several different manuals. Post up a picture of your valet switch and your FOB and maybe the control unit and we can see if I have a manual that matches your alarm.

Sorry guys I have not done much with it for awhile. I will post a pic this week or next. I did go to an alarm shop with the control box and the guy ran the FCC ID on the box and found that it belonged to Toyota. So I don't know what the deal is.

I'll post the pics this.

BTW, the indicator LED/valet switch looks exactly like the one in my mom's '02 Camry.
