That is a terrible idea... but one that I am currently toying with. The addition of another kiddo has made it difficult to pack everything in the Cruiser. BUT it is probably not going to happen... I want a hiker trailer... and wife loves her LC!
Sorry if someone has already said this. But I like to caution people who say oh the 100 is reliable just buy one and go. Relatability and maintenance are two totally different things!
When you are buying a 15-20 year old car, there’s going to be maintenance that needs to be done. Whether is is a 120k mile or 190k mile, expect to replace all fluids, the bushings in your suspension will be dry and cracked 9/10 times, your tie rods will possibly have play. I consider all of this maintenance in an older vehicle and if you don’t do your own labor it will add up 3x as fast.
100s are not cheap to maintain, but if taken care of they can be extremely reliable. I have 252k miles and no signs of stopping.
100 series specific items: AHC if applicable, heater T’s, timing belt, etc. Heater Ts are not hard to do but are hypercritical that they are replaced. A dealer or local mechanic will charge you $150-200 to do them. A timing belt is $150 in parts and $850 in labor. I think you get my point. So to someone else advice, don’t use all of your budget on the car itself.

Good luck on a Hiker Trailer. Just inquired about getting one and they responded that they currently have a 12-15 month lead time. If I had them start now, I'd be lucky to use it before 2021. Now looking at the Escapade trailers since they have a 4-5 month lead time. Hikers are very nice though. Almost bought a 2016 Hiker Offroad Extreme here in Austin last week. Paid a deposit to the seller and came back the next day with the rest of the cash. They sold it to someone else 2 hours before I got there.
We were in a similar situation when we got our 05. We have an 06 forster xt and 08 impreza hatch with two kids as well. We had done 3 road trips (2 in the forester 1 in the impreza) and found that we were running out of space. With a roof box it worked but it was not the best. We knew we were going to be moving and having my dad move in with us so the need to fit three across or 3rd row became more important. We had talked to some families on one of our trips to Moab that were in a 100 and it made its way onto our radar. We test drove a bunch of different vehicles but nothing "felt" right. Decided to look at the 100 and was surprised it was actually in our price range. Found a couple 100's locally to test drive, fell in love. Wasn't as big as the sequoia, could fit 3 comfortably in second row for short trips, 3rd row fit little kids/young teens well, 3rd row was easily removed and plenty more reasons (the GX and 4runner both felt to "skinny". Took awhile to find the right one though. Fast forward a couple years and 6 large road trips later we have found that the 100 with a small trailer is the best set up. When we go on our trips we camp so have a decent amount of stuff. We run a roof rack bike rack across the top of the trailer to carry the MT bikes, plastic totes under the bikes covered by an old school canvas tarp, and any other misc larger items we pick up. Average about 13 MPG with that set up and everyone is happy. For portions we usually have 6-7 of us in the 100 and no complaints of being uncomfortable. But like others above have stated maintenance can and does add up, but knock on wood it has never let us down or stranded. While we don't wheel it hard we do a lot of forest road, trips to trail heads, snow, etc. While there are plenty of other vehicles that can do the stuff we do in the 100, we just love how much confidence 100 has doing it and the comfort it provides doing it.
