is 1st gear considered a "granny" gear?

this might be a stupid question, but this is only the 2nd 4 speed manual i have ever owned.

i used have a 4 speed manual s10 pickup, my first car, but i used all 4 gears.

my 60 seems be be fine starting out in 2nd gear. i actually prefer it unless i am on a hill.

does it really make a difference, or is just a matter of preference?

No not really. Older tranny's like the SM420 and SM465 found in domestic pickups had a really really low 1st gear. Typically useless on the street. The 4 speed you have would not be considered a "granny gear" because it is actually usable on the street. The granny gears are nice off road tho.

put bigger tires on, youll start using that first gear agian :)

nice segue (sp?)...this way i don't have to start a new thread.

i have 31 x 10.5 on my 60 right now with a 2" lift. it is a daily driver and probably will continue to be my dd for the next 2-3 years. i will probably not be doing much wheelin in it since i have to depend on it every day. i plan on keeping the 31s on it for now, but i am considering going back to stock height and taking out the lift until i am able to get another car to use as a daily driver etc.

question is, should there be any problem lowering the 2" and keeping the 31s on it, or will the front ones rub on turns? it looks like it would be ok, but i am not sure at what size tires a lift would be necessary.

hopefully someone reads this and i don't have to start a new thread to get it answered. :D

almost forgot, only reason i would be losing the lift is my wife and daughter ride with me quite a bit and i can't take the complaining for the next 3 years about having to "climb in"

Yeah, I have 31 x 10.5 x 15s too... stock height, no rubbing. I do use 1st gear though.

I've got 31s on mine, and there's no problem.

Maybe instead of lowering it (that seems like a lot of work) maybe you could put nerf bars on it to help them climb in?

that is what i was thinking about, so what is the cost typically for nerf bars, or a link would help i guess, so i can check for myself? also, install of nerfs would be pretty easy i am guessing??

I also have 31's on my 60 with no trouble so far. (stock height)

But I second the recomendation for running boards or nerf's.

or jsut don't let anyone who complains into the truck... tell em that complaining about a landcruiser feature (height, rock hard leaf springs, slow performance) will strike them down with a vengeful curse from teh LC gods... their tall cause their not an SUV, they are meant to be wheelsed, the ride is hard because it was made to survive the test of time, and it goes slow because reliability costs horespower,

but seriously 31's should fit, and bar or step it up...

Im not certain when the gear is low enough to be considered granny, but my H55 is pretty low.

thanks for all of the input...last thing, since the consensus is 1st gear is not a "granny" gear, which is what i thought. would it really make any difference or not if i continued to start out in 2nd gear instead of 1st? i would think it should not really affect the tranny in anyway, but.....just want to make sure etc.

It'll be a little harder on the clutch, and don't do it when pulling a trailer or something.

thanks doc. wasn't thinking about the clutch i guess. don't want to wear it out any faster than it has to, so back to 1st i go :D

I sometimes start out in 1st in the 40 or 60 but not often, what I do..do often is shift from 1st to 3rd.

and nope 1st in a US spec 4 speed(h42) is not a grany gear.

I wouldn't go as far as calling the 1st gear on the H55F a "granny low", that term tends to be reserved for the very low (and mostly unusable) 1st gear on domestic trannies like the SM420 or SM465. Yes, it's lower than the H52, but 4.95:1 is not that low. 1st gear on an H55F is actually very usable, especially when running bigger tires.

I run 35's with 4.10's and the H55F, and I use first gear to start almost every time.
