Ipod integration USA Spec PA15-TOY -- CAS-TLC cable needed for install?

Just wanted to give an update since my experience with the pa15-toy has not been a smooth one.

I purchased the unit without the CAS-TLC cable and installed...no dice. USA Spec tech support said I needed the cable. So I purchased the cable and reinstalled...still no dice. Now USA Spec says I need the CAS-LEX cable instead, so I've exchanged the cables and the new one is on its way. Hoping that works, otherwise going Vais.

No go with the CAS-LEX cable that plugs into larger 20-pin connector in back of head unit. It was the closest thing to working I've had so far - charged my iphone 5 and recognized it as disk 9, but I had no volume control or steering wheel controls. Played with all dips switch settings. Talked with Victor at USA Spec and he was our of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions for me to try before I mail this back?

Might not work for you, but maybe get another unit and one by one, swap out the components to see if you can isolate the problem. I had a problem with a cable at one point which was intermittent and as a result a bit tricky to diagnose over the phone. Assuming you can return the "bad" unit after maybe this is a viable option.
