Howdy all,

Like most intros, I’ve been lurking here for a few months and have wanted to get into a LC for years. I find the 60s the most aesthetically pleasing but alas they aren’t practical for me at the moment (big family with young children etc.). I’ve landed on a 200.

I hate to ask for rust advice in my first post, but I’m looking at a truck in IL which has me a bit worried. It is a handsome rig and pretty much what I’m looking for and affordable. Ideally I would find a truck near my home in TN but they aren’t any really. What do yall make of this one? Would you walk because of that rust?

Here is a link to the listing on the dealer’s website. I tried to figure out how to attach photos to the post for convenience but couldn’t.

Thank you very much indeed for any advice!

Objectively, not the worst one, I would walk because I hate rust with passion.

Agreed. The tricky thing is I’ve been watching the 200 market pretty closely for several months and it seems as though the northern trucks are overrepresented relative to CA and the South.

I'd suggest a LX 570. Generally cheaper, less likely to be abused off road, and I think there are more of them.

If you must fly and drive home, see if someone on here can volunteer to crawl underneath. Maybe.

It has rust in all the usual places that would need a lot of remediation. The KDSS valves are likely very rusty. If those can’t be opened, suspension work can be a challenge. Does it have a good history? Since you mentioned practicality, Is a 3” lift with mud terrain tires ok for a big family with young children? (High climb for access and noisy on-road and less mpg and rougher ride). I’ve read on here some frustrations with Icon suspensions, so do a search for issues with their shocks.

I would wait for a better one. Rust isn't terrible, but not an ideal starting point for sure. I've owned several cars from the midwest and all of them gave me maintenance headaches in one way or another stemming from their previous life in the rust belt. Unfortunately, Colorado is quickly joining the rust belt with over-the-top mag chloride use.--didn't used to be that way, but I digress... :(

@Sandroad makes a good point--you'll probably want to replace tires right away, @manofthewoods also a good point about getting a Lexus instead. Much more plentiful and cheaper. But from an identity/image standpoint, if you want an LC, you want an LC, so I get that.

I would pass. That amount of rust is not worth it. Wait for a cleaner one to come up. It takes a long time to find a clean rust free LC, but you’ll thank yourself later.

Is it me or does that price seem low for that year and miles? Wonder why.

Eminently reasonable, but I’ve been drooling over LCs for years and I think, at least for this truck, Im going to stick with the LC.

That is a good idea Re having someone check it out if they are willing. I believe I saw a thread about this somewhere no too long ago.

This seems wise to me. Thanks for the input. Im in no rush… other than I want it now haha.

Im not sure if the LC market is seasonable. If so, perhaps it will pick up a bit in the Spring.

Yup. Y’all have all but convinced me. Thanks!

And, yes, I do just want a LC. It is not necessarily reasonable, but the whole mystique around the truck is compelling to me.

While I also like the 16+ LC200 looks more, I can see with a few mods the 16+ LX570 comes to live as well. The CBI front bumper I really like to cut down on the enormous grill and an accompanying rear bumper and wheels/tires would make a huge difference. I would go for a red interior as the wood is dark, which otherwise in the black and beige interiors is way ugly for my taste. Red leather seats is a bit funky as well but it has grown on me.

Admittedly, that is a handsome truck!

Out of curiosity— between an LX and LC which do yall think appears more expensive? In addition to my general desire for a LC, I also prefer not having the most ‘flashy’ of expensive looking vehicles. Ironically, I think this means spending more on a LC but maybe Im off here…

good idea

those who dream of LC aint gonna be happy with LX

LC is all that and a bag of chips - there is a reason the resale are so high and they are so coveted

That rust is irrelevant. Now that most states salt their roads any untreated LC will get that minor amount of rust in a few years. Unless you live in the PNW, CA, NV, or AZ. Fluid Film it once a year and don’t worry about it. That frame and suspension will last another 25 years minimum.

Honestly, the ARB bull bar looks great on the 2016+ too. I saw some pictures on here of a color matched ARB on one and it’s probably one of the best I’ve seen.
