Hi All,

It was recommended that my '65 might have a lot in common with the F25's.

I posted under the 40s section but thought I'd introduce my new rig here as well:

Am not quite sure which engine this is. It's not the original as he numbers don't match, but someone elsewhere on the board suggested it might have come from a '68 which would seem about right given its #.

Can't tell you a lot about the rims either, except to say that they are almost identical to what I used to have on my '78, except for the hubcap clips which my old one was missing. It actually came with a full set of acorn hubcaps that are in great shape (matte gray rather than chrome).

After seeing a pic on here of an original '65 I figured out that my hood was not aftermarket afterall, and that there was a reason for the three holes down the middle of it! I looked far and wide for a hood spear including Ebay, parts sites and my local shop. Sure enough, I finally got around to going through the box of extras that came with my rig and there was the spear! A near perfect specimen.

After a wash I fitted the spear onto the hood which looks quite spiffy if you ask me. Much better than the holes that were there before!

Looking good!

I did not ask in your other thread, but what are your plans for your '65? What else did you find in those boxes...the old running boards, old hubcaps, tools??

Acorn hubcaps are there - not sure if these are right for a '65 model?

Running boards are coming - the PO didn't have them on hand but has them at another location

Other items include tinted sun visors, some door handles (not sure where they belong), and an ash tray for the dash board which will go in soon.

Acorns are correct!

Acorn Hubcaps with the stamped T are correct, but if you want to be true to stock, your rims need to be black, and a thinner tire, such as yokohama Y742S 700r15; http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes.

Your '65 has no heater air intake, so I am guessing that it is a late '64 build, and will most likely have the short 2-piece running boards, which came stock with an off white pyramid mat. Other '65s had the longer 2-piece with the same white pyramid rubber mat

Did you look up your vin number to see when abouts your 40 was manufactured?

Again, not sure it you want to restore, or mod and drive, so just giving my 0.02 on the above

In the US market a heater was a option in 65. By 66 almost all US imported FJ40s had a stock heater. Over the years one or to non heater 66s have shown up. In other markets heaters weren't installed into the eighties. The 65s with the stock heater had the fresh air inlet vains at a 45 degree. After that there were straight across. 64s I've seen had the VIN start with a 4. This was the last year the VIN started with the last digit of the year the vehicle made. 65s would of had the long running boards not short. It would of had a different rear view mirror then the one this one has. Probably a 64 production date. It does have the brass tags by the VIN plate on the firewall which means it was made at least a model year early then titled. No big deal, it was very common back then for this to happen. Toyota had a slow start in the US. Some FJ25s that weren't made after 1960 were titled as 62s.

Thanks all! Based on the VIN it was definitely built in late '64. I expect the running boards will be short.

I'm not really a purist, so though I enjoy the original touches, I really just plan to drive the truck as it is and address issues as needed. No restoration planned as I'm pretty content with it the way it is.

I plan to remove the heater in the short term and may see if I can clean it up a bit. Certainly not planning to toss it out.

I decided to spiff up the FJ a bot today with a mini project. Ever since I saw the car it has bugged me that the ornament screen is the same color as the body. I'm not sure what was stock, but I know my old FJ had a black screen that looked much better.

I dropped the front panel and pulled out the screen for a nice spray bath - here is the result. I thought I had a better 'before' shot so neglected to take one today, but looking at the photos above you can make out the difference.

I also put his shoes on.

Hate to clutter up your thread with covetousness, but that thing is SWEET, so feel free to PM me if you ever wanna part with it!

:)

Nice 40, please keep posting updates.

It looks like your FJ has had the same engine swap that mine has. I think that's an F145 (see the remnants of the red decal on the right side of the valve cover). I haven't found any exact information, but I think my engine is also a '68 model F145.

I'm very curious why it's so common for the early FJs to have donor engines from vehicles a few years newer. Did the engine fail in its first few years or several years later? We may never know.
