Hello All,
I just joined after lurking for several days. Found some good info here using the search. My name is Mark, i live in central western Vt, I tend to prefer these older rigs over the newer stuff. I find they are built better and are easier to work on. My last revival was my 75 midget. rebuilt it from the ground up. I recently aquired an 87 FJ60 with a rather tired engine. I would be out right now checking it out but it is anly about 5 degrees out with a 30 or so mile an hour gusting breeze. Pretty much kills any idea of working outside on Cold Iron. Besides i have some snow clearing to do after yesterdays storm....but anyway, My Cruiser is very dificult to start cold, once it has been started it seems fine for the rest of the day, from what i see here in the searches is that about all the advice i see (along with lots of sympathy) is to install a block heater. There has to be a cure for this problem. but i guess i will buy a block heater. It is pretty good advice.
Anyhow i just wanted to introduce myself, and let you folks know i will be hanging around and learning.

Welcome...Your solution is to move south. :hillbilly

It's cold here in Southern California (75 F) and my rig starts real easy. And I don't have a block heater.

Other than a block heater, which is a good idea, you need to check and make sure your choke is functioning properly. Pull the top of the air cleaner off, and pull the choke cable. Make sure the choke is completely closing in the carb. If not, adjust the cable housing on the firewall side of the carb until it will close fully.

Im in Nebraska, and it was 12 degrees yesterday and its supposed to be 65 tomorrow. At least you have regularity.

One of the things about all of the Cruisers I have owned is that they all have a different way that they like to start. On my 60, its 2 slow depressions of the gas pedal, choke full out, start, push the choke in to the second to last notch. Then it will start anytime, any temperature, without a block heater.

Monkey around till you find out what your truck likes, maybe that will help the cold start, but a block heater couldnt hurt either.

Welcome to the cult.

Thanks for all the replies!
VTCruiser, ayup near Rutland, actually east Wallingford, not to far that s for sure. The way i see it is a block heater isnt a bad idea, but it sortof just treats a sympton, not the illness. i did notice that my choke is not closing 100% of the way. it could maybe go a bit further . i wish it wasnt -15 wind chill out there right now, i would like to be looking into this ......O well spring is coming.
As requested heres a pic of my cruiser, and the mg. kinda like David and goliath....lol
