I recently purchased a 1990 FJ62 from a coworker who has owned the rig for the last 22 years. I'm the third owner and it has always been in Texas or Arizona. It was the best rust free and original example I have seen that wasn't going for a ridiculous price on B.A.T. I bought it with 171,000 miles and have put about 2k miles on it so far. Ihave been daily driving it around Austin and so far it has been great! I have a binder full of maintenance records that go back to the early 90's which is pretty cool. Beyond baselining all the fluids, I had to replace the radiator due to a pinhole leak and I had a body shop scrape out all the old rain channel sealant and redo the seam sealer and repaint the roof, pulled the windshield for paint as well and confirmed it was rust free as well (pics of roof repaint below)!
I have a few big trips planned over the next year (big bend, arkansas high water mark trail, and Maine summer 25) so i'll be updating this post with little things I do along the way. Ive replaced the OME leaf spring bushings, replaced the headlights with the Torfab kit (love it for the price but would prefer the Holley retrobrights), shifter bushings, new OEM marker lights. My focus right now is reliability so Ill be going through the fuel system soon and doing all the basic tune up stuff along with desmogging. pretty excited to have another fun project rig and have enjoyed learning from the wealth of information here on MUD. Would love to eventually LS swap it but for now i'm just going to drive it as is, keep it maintained and running as good as possible while planning out the build. I also post alot on IG @87_freerunner out of boredom if you
Here's a few pics of the rig and the last pic is my 87 4runner that has been an ongoing build since 2016.
