Hello all, I'm looking for some insights and comments and whatever else (and yes, I know there's lots of threads like this, but anyway, here we go...)

I have been a 40 series nut since I was about 11 or so, and until recently, a 40 series was the only cruiser I would consider owning. Every time I drive the HJ47 its a blast. Just awesome fun. However, there are some limitations to the 40 series platform which make it not ideal for traveling long distances (Adelaide - Perth sort of thing - ~2733 km from our joint here to where we stay in Perth) plus detours on the way to various 4x4ing activities.

Recently, a friend bought a 98 FZJ105 - 35s, auto, 4 inch lift and so on. Coming from a 40 series, that is very comfortable, smooth, it's got air conditioning, power steering and all that sort of thing, and its nice to drive. Ok, so, AussieHJCruza starts looking at 105 series trucks that are manual(don't like the auto), preferably not dark colours, less than 300 000 ks, not out of the mines and so on, but there is one thing that I can't quite suss out. FZJ105 or HZJ105? I've never driven a n/a 1HZ in a 100 series before, only a 75 series. I've driven a HZJ105 dual cab that was turboed and intercooled with 160kw at all 4, and I liked it, but it was still slow and the fuel consumption was dreadful, although the exhaust note and whistle was absolutely unreal. This may not be representative of all turbo 1HZs, but is just my experience. Until recently as well, a diesel was the only thing I would look at, just because it was a diesel.

But, once again, since I had this friend's FZJ105 over the weekend (he went away), I've decided that I really like the 1FZ-FE. It's smooth and quick-ish, and on gas, not ruinusly expensive to fuel. I was able to beat a friend with a GQ patrol with TB42 (4.2 litre I6 carb petrol) with extractors and a 350 cfm Holley off from the lights. As long as I can beat the Patsy, I'm happy. So, I was looking at FZJ105s over the weekend. Found one with 136 000ks, GXL, Manual, and so-on for 18k. Then just now, I took the 47 out for a drive and the diesel bug has hit me again.
If I was to get a 1HZ, it would get a Gturbo and a water-air intercooler.
If I was to get a 1FZ, it would get some sort of forced induction, turbo or blower and intercooler. (wouldn't mind some comments regarding this either.)
Both would get 4 inches of lift, 35s, roof rack, lockers, exhaust and so-on. What I'm looking for is a capable 4x4 and a resonable long-range tourer. I know lifts and all that compromise the road manners, but that can be lived with.

Now, a diesel fetches on average, 8-10 grand more than a petrol. For 10 grand, I can get an intercooled supercharger kit from http://www.capa.com.au/kits_toyota.htm that will give the 1FZ 270 kw, and with injected LPG (propane) it will be reasonably cheap to run, and with the main and subtanks and LPG, would have reasonable range.

Please discuss/comment/examine my logic or lack thereof - is a n/a 1HZ worth the same as a blown and intercooled 1FZ in a 105 series (or, is a standard HZJ105 worth 8-10k more than an equivalent FZJ105?) Diesel is just cooler, but is it worth 1o grand?

I am aware that North America didn't get the 105 series or a 1FZ in a 100, but figured here was the best place to put this. Mods: be free to move it elsewhere if it doesn't belong

And also, sorry about the ridiculously long-winded post. I'll go back through and try to cull it a bit.

Ummmmmmm, most of on mud are from states , almost none of us have never seen an 105 in gas or diesel trim . but most of us want one . so the basic rule is that the diesel car is more expensive compare to its gasoline engine trim but it would always hold its value in resale.
The problem with HZJ is that the piston are not built to handle high boost, so a low pressure turbo (around 7-8 psi / .5 bar) should be fine.
If I were you I would buy the diesel trim . good luck
p.s. don’t forget you can always swap in a 6.5 Chevy diesel in that bad boy

That would be awesome, but I am one of those all Toyota types

Choice of petrol or diesel in a 4wd in oz is REALLY a real simple Q&A:

Are you planning on long distances from a fuel station and how much petrol are you comfortable in carrying to get the same range as if it was a diesel?

From my perspective (in oz) it is real simple, for the distances I cover from fuel/town/etc anything but a diesel 4wd would not be feasible since I do eventually want to return and can't afford a helicopter fuel drop :)

cheers,
george.

Possibly, but not on a regular basis. However, knowing that I've got that range in case the need arises is a good thing.
So so far, 1HZ - 2 1FZ - 0

Point on favor of any gasser it's power .. of we were comparing 1FZ vs 1HD-T ok .. Diesel wins .. but 1FZ vs 1HZ .. gotta thing about that twice ..

Yep, especially since the 10# series 1HZ is weaker internally than the 7#/80 series version, and the gearbox is said to be weaker, which creates difficulties when the 1HZ is made bearable.

Back from the dead! OP did you ever pick a 105? In the same place trying to decide myself and wanted some experience based feedback.

Yep, back from the dead alright! I actually bought a HDJ80, so no, I didn't choose a 105, but if I was gonna get a 105 now, I'd get a HZJ105 and have a chat to Gturbo @gbentink

Thanks. Hoping to test drive one today. I'm in a country where adding the turbo wouldn't be easy, so it will be a stock engine for me. I should "need" the sub tank for most trips, but I think it would be handy. I'm also not going wild with mods, so maybe I can deal with it being a bit sluggish.
