Who here has taken their truck to mexico? And if so, how did you deal w/the insurance issue? My truck is appraised at way more than book value, if i had a copy of the appraisal would they look after me or would it be hard to get my truck's value back if it was stolen or written off? I'm going to be there for 3 months so i thought wheels would be nice, but i looove my truck. I think you understand!;)

usually you can get insurance for out of country through your current insurance. althought it might be spency for three months. id call them. i know it costs me about 45 bucks if i want insurance to go to canada for a week. but they may have plans for extended trip like yours

www.bajabound.com they seem to be the cheapest out of the two big Mexican insurance companies (GE and Seguros?) no full coverage on ANY carrier if vehicle is over ten years... six month or one year policy is the way to go if you plan on being down more than three or four days. I think I paid $150.00 for my last one year policy.if you're worried about your ride, then maybe look at a long term rental or short term lease in Mexico. good luck, drive nicely as your are a visitor, and don't be an a$$#*!e; Mexico is a great place and I hate to see it soiled by poor attitudes- sorry for the rant, no offense meant, I just like the place.

I agree with philos1. Some major carriers offer a Mexico rider, but they limit you in the amount of time you are covered and SOMETIMES the distance you can travel into Mexico.

Required by the Mexican govt. Don't leave home without it.

AAA can also hook you up.

FWIW Mexican Insurance is a scam! Yes, you must have it to go beyond 30 miles or so of the border. It depends on which state. Your US auto insurance works within this distance of the border. If you go beyond, yes you must have Mexican insurance.

For a 6 month policy, I ususally go with Vagabundos del Mar. It is a sailing club but offers auto insurance at a reasonable price.

Not that anyone wants to have an accident, but Mexico is really bad. If you do, people will usually offer you money up front or just drive off. They do not want the cops involved because in many cases, they haul both parties off to jail. They hold you in jail until they have done their own investigation. They wiill issue a ticket to the guilty party and release both parties. It usually takes a few hours but can last a day or two.

I have driven thousands of miles all over Mexico and never had an accident (knock on wood). I have, however met a few that have had minor fender benders. Most the time, the guilty party just drove off. The other times, the police were involved, and both parties were hauled to jail.

But, here is a dilemma. Many of the insurance policies state that you have to have a police report. And, to top it all off, the insurance may not pay for the entire amount of the damage.

Driving in Mexico is not dangerous, per se. Drive slowly and cautiously and by all means, obey the Golden Rule: DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT!!! The Chupa Cabra comes out! No, just kidding. At night, the truckers come out in full force and many animals find the warm pavement a comforting place.

Good luck. Have fun. I leave in Feb/March to do the same thing.

Ins. in Mex.

Being a transplanted San Diego native...If you like your rig insure it. I have seen and heard of more than one car being confiscated for not having ins. after a wreck (especially with the locals) Also its not just the "bad guys" you have to worry about...In the town I am from the local cops arrested a car thief who pulled out a badge....and said " its OK im a cop" mexican cop....they then put him in the car and explained to him on the way to jail...not in this country.

Also had a buddy who had a mean suburban that was stolen.....just to see it get shot up on TV in a drug dealer -- Mex. DEA gun fight in T.J. about a year later.....and it wasn't the dealers who were driving the stolen rig...

I used to live in Mexico, I own and operate a hunting operation in Sonora and I have never had anybody ask for my insurance in 13 years.

I usually go with Sanborns for my own peace of mind. Its pretty inexpensive but I dont think I would count on getting any more than blue book for it if its stolen.

I have put a lot of miles on my 60 in Sonora, its a lot of fun. Best of luck.

I drove through the length of Mexico and we tried to buy the Mexican insurance but could not find the agent (siesta??) so we trucked on through without issue. We definately had our own insurance in the states covering us though so make sure to contact your company. Mexico itself is incredible and the people were great, just stay out of the tourist zones and treat people well, no worries!
