My '03 LX electrical FSM shows an ECT solenoid (on the tranny) that connects to the engine ECU (actually 5 ECUs together in that block behind the glovebox) via 14 wires. Then there is a park position neutral switch, accelerator position sensor, stop-light switch, shift lock control ECU connecting to the main ECUs. Also, there is an ECT pattern select switch (power and 2nd gear start) that connect to the ECU (but not directly to the solenoid).
Okay, this is what the system outline says:
"Previous automatic transmissions have selected each gear shift using mechnically controlled throttle hydraulic pressure, governor dydraluic pressure and lock-up hydraulic pressure. The electronically controlled transmission, however, electrically controls the line pressure, throttle presure, lock-up pressure and accumulator pressure, etc. through the solenoid valve. The electronically controlled transmission is a system which precisely controls gear shift timing and lock-up timing in response to the vehicle's driving conditions and the engine condition detected by various sensors. It makes smooth driving possible by shift selection for each gear which is the most appropriate to the driving conditions at that time, and by preventing downing, sqat and gear shock when starting off."
The rest of the page describes how the gear shift control, line hydraulic pressure control, high response gear shifting control, clutch hydraulic pressure control, lock-up and flexible lock-up control, stop light switch control, Ai-shift control, ECT pattern select switch circuit, and transfer shift operation work.
So it appears the ECU behind the glove box tells the solenoid what to do, as the solenoid is physically attached to the transmission housing. The park/neutral position switch and shift lock connect ECU interact with each other a little, but all the other parts feed directly into the main ECU's (I'm looking at the schematic). This leads me to believe the ECU is different altogether. If you have a 4spd schematic, you could at least compare the pin numbers and wire coloring.
I have seen a LX that had a 5spd manual swapped in, but for that, you probably replace the entire ECU bank since none of the stuff (ECT solenoid, park/neutral switch, lock-up ECU are used).
