Subscribed. This is great, thanks for making a thread for this transformation. I wouldn't have given this truck a second thought.

I have to agree, I don't think I would have taken this on but now that I see it can be done...I mean, as long as you get it for practically free...
I thought I had a lot of things to work on but I see now how good I have it ;)

this will be a great thread, nice work so far.
Im also in the process of a filthy jade mica refresh. Thanks for bringing us along.

Before you swap the motor, maybe make sure the oil pressure sensor isn’t bad, and it actually has low oil pressure

Awesome work.

Thanks for all the support guys! The interior is starting to go back in. The rear carpet got the same treatment as the main carpet, and I am replacing the original "jute" backing with new purchased from Amazon. I have also scored a better set of front seats from a local part out. more to follow !

Have you thought about putting down a layer of sound deadener? It is trivial to install when you have the carpet out. I have experienced significant noise reduction with butyl deadener.

I was going to recommend the same thing, sound deadener that is. There are numerous options but wow, what an opportunity.

Sometimes it's amazing how little money and some elbow grease can completely transform a vehicle. Of course there's threads out there where someone throws thousands of dollars into creating the perfect overlanding vehicle but it's threads like these where it's more about just having a nice daily to get to work in and how little money that sometimes takes. Keep up the good work.

Nice work, amazing cleanup ! I've wondered what was behind those rear vents ! That Cruiser is lucky you're the one that got it.

So here's the method I used. I first soak down the entire carpet with water, and then liberally apply a mix of dawn dish soap and powdered "oxiclean". Let that soak in for about an hour, then pressure wash with plain water. I could not believe the transformation! The carpet looks almost new now, and after it dried, has no smell whatsoever. here's the before and after.

I also fully cleaned the headliner. This has to be cleaned more gently, but it also came out great. It looks almost new. I used a mix of warm water and oxiclean, applied gently.

Nice job all the way around. I did the same in my LC a couple years after purchase and used the same ingredients to clean the carpet.

I also agree with the comments above - good time to replace the door lock actuators and sound deadening the interior.

Awesome work- doing what I had wanted to do when I had mine.
x3 or 4 on sound dampener, and a better headunit. Now is the time to run wiring.

Its so refreshing seeing these trucks brought back to life. And if you ask me that amount of maintenance is not too bad and is worth it!
Kudos to you!

You know that old Cruiser smiles every time it sees you, she's getting a whole new lease on life!! :)

Got my junkyard seats in, they aren't perfect, but are worlds better than what was in there. Paid $140 each for the front seats. Amazingly they are the right shade of leather for my grey interior. I feel like I got super lucky with this find. The 2nd row seats that came with the truck were still in really good shape, just needed a very through cleaning. 3rd row are long gone, but I don't care too much about that. So all the leather has been thoroughly cleaned and conditioned using the Meguiar's 2-part cleaner / conditioner. All interior plastics were cleaned and wiped down with 303 protectant. So now the interior smells and feels great now! Still have to clean the door panels and replace the speaker cloth, so those are the last bits of the interior to go back in. I also need to make a decision on what to do about the steering wheel, the leather is shredded on it. I will either get a good used one, or send it out to get it re-leathered.

I did drive the truck around for a couple of weeks with the original 295k mile engine that was suffering from low oil pressure. Sure enough it started knocking. I don't know what went wrong with it, I suspect something happened with the oil pump or something. I didnt know how long it had been run with low oiil pressure, so I knew going into this that I would be replacing or rebuilding the engine.

And I have some great news, I have acquired a low-mileage replacement engine! (approx 160k miles) I found someone fairly local to me who was parting out a 99 LX470 because the frame was rotten from rust. This was the sketchiest engine pull I have ever done, in a yard with my engine hoist on a piece of plywood. But after 5+ hours of work, I somehow managed to yank her out ! Towed her home with my trusty 4Runner and yard trailer, im amazed the trailer held the weight, but she did. I paid $1000 for the entire drivetrain, which I think is an amazing deal. The "new" engine will be getting a "bit of a refresh" before it goes in. You're all about to see where my username comes from. Stay tuned !
