I'm a newbie and just bought an 96' 80 last Thursday:cool:. Unfortunately the day after I got it home the Alt started going out. :mad:I will post pictures as soon as I can get it out of the garage! I decided to change the alt, but have run into a little snag.

Alright I pulled my bad Alt yesterday and after removing all of the nuts, bolts, and wires from it, it still hung there like the pivot bolt was still there. It pivoted without a problem but I gained no ground in getting it out of the pivot bolt bracket. I resorted to a brass punch and hammer to free it loose.

The problem now is that I am trying to install the new alternator, but the same pivot bolt bracket is giving me 10 kinds of ****! Is this normal? Am I missing something? The FSM says nothing about this! Should I take a file to it? Is there a trick to gaining leverage on the alt? Please help, I'm ready to get the ride on the road!:steer:

I believe the rear bushing on the alternator, if Denso, is adjustable.
You can press it out, install on the pivot bracket,
and tighten the nut/bolt to press back in to fit the bracket.
I just replaced mine on my '91, so it's fresh in my mind.

Your bushing is most likely the culprit. I hope these pics clarify the problem for you

azTony, excellent to know about that!!!! I had to get a 3 ft pry bar to get mine out.

Thank you JJ and Tony! That's exactly what I did and it worked like a charm! I just took the lady on her first ride and I think she likes it!:bounce:

Thanks again!

I know that thing is out of the garage by now... he must be driving it and the camera is waiting for him to return...

Pretty much Tony... I have a hard time getting out of this thing... Here she is! She may be familiar to some of you, but I haven't seen her in the Registry. I plan on doing a lot to it, but the PO has me off to a pretty good start and yes that is a bottle opener on the custom front bumper!
