Hi I'm putting new injectors in my 1985 bj70 (3b), and have run into a few of snags. It's my only vehicle, so if you could help me troubleshoot this sooner, I would really be grateful!! :p

First, there is a lot of crud where the nozzles sit. How do I safely clean that area out? I guess I'm worried about crud falling down into the cylinders, which couldn't be a good thing. How do people deal with this?

Second, I've removed everything except the very bottom gasket. I cannot see the thing inside the nozzle seat. How do I remove it??

Third, I removed the nozzle leakage pipe and found that there is a crack in it where it joins the frontmost injector. I'm afraid I may have caused this when I was removing it.

In any case, is this something that somebody can fix or do I have to try and source a new one? Also what are the consequences of running the cruiser with a crack in the nozzle leakage pipe?

Thank you in advance :)

Okay, so I had only taken off one injector body at the time of my first post and after taking off the other 3, I found the bottom gaskets in the other 3.

Is it possible that the frontmost injector had no gasket??

Also, if you've done this before could you please take a look at the gaskets that I removed and tell me if they are the same as the ones that I was given with the injectors? Obviously they look different, but I'm guessing that when I torque the injectors down, the gasket will change shape. If that's the case, which orientation is the correct one? The gaskets in the picture are in both orientations. The first ones are the old ones and the second ones are the new. Also the first old one is in the same orientation as when it was in the cruiser.

With the EPC, It shows there is a seat, and a gasket that go in the injector hole. With a missing seal, you may have been missing one. I've seen both types of seals with different diesels, I haven't pulled my 3Bs injectors, so I cannot attest to that:grinpimp:

As far as the return leak line, I can't remember if it is a high pressure line. You may be able to temp repair it if it is a low pressure line. Check with Radd Cruisers, they might be able to source you one.

Okay, so assuming those gaskets were correct afterall, I reinstalled the injectors. I bled the fuel line and tried firing her up, to no avail. Thinking I didn't get all the air out I started trying to bleed the fuel line again (using the hand pump of course) however, I pumped for a solid 15 minutes and couldn't get diesel to come out the bleeder valve.

Thinking there was air getting in through one of the fuel lines that I just reinstalled I thought I'd close the valve and see if I could get pressure by pumping the pump. I could, and after opening the bleed valve, I got a bunch of air coming out...but no diesel. I have no idea what is happening, but I'm getting a bit worried that I'm going to have to take it into a shop here in Calgary.

I torqued everything in the injector install to the appropriate specs too...

I used a tube brush and some light scratching with a pick to get the carbon off, you can try vacuuming out the bits. It is important the nozzle seats properly.

Could the air be coming in the nozzle leakage pipe that is cracked????

Look at the primer first. Have you used your primer pump before this, and did it work fine? they often suck air. Search primer pump replacement on the forum and you will find some good info. Your local injection pump specialist may also have a Denso unit to replace yours as they are the same in may other diesel models.

Those gaskets don't look correct to me, but i'm running a 13bt so i can't be sure. Order new ones from Toyota and compare.

Hang in there, don't take it to the shop yet.

Okay, I'll give Toyota a call on Monday.

That's what I ended up doing with the carbon.

Yeah, I've used the pump before and it worked just fine the first attempt this evening too. I'll take a look at the forum entries first though and see if maybe I can figure it out...

Thank you so much for your help :)

I was just reading through some other threads on injector installations and looks like lots of people have problems with bleeding post install. Can you bleed the whole system (i.e. lines past the filter) with the priming pump?

Thanks!

My Primer pump requires around 30-50 pumps to suck fuel from the tank, threw dry fuel lines and fill the filter. It is a Denso unit. Start by bleeding your filter. Next try bleeding your injectors, have somebody crank the engine while loosening the nuts on top of the injectors until fuel spills out. Start with the injector closest to the front, and work your way back. You may also need to bleed your injection pump.

The pipe bolted to the top of the injectors is the return fuel line. You need to replace or repair it. It's a low presure pipe, you could try brazing it with brass. {remove the pipe from the injectors first.}

Yeah, I took a closer look at what the leakage pipe did and got a new one from Radd Cruisers. Slapped 'er on today, bled the fuel filter and injection pipes and she fired right up :)

Thanks for your help everyone!
