Hey everybody!

I did a 'mud' search and found nothing for what I'm looking for.

We have a stock '96 80 series that will be lifted 2-3" within the next few months. It has factory running boards that will eventually be replaced with sliders that should (hopefully) double as steps for smaller passengers.

While thinking about this (and more, of course) I considered ingress/egress for our 8yo daughter. She likes to occasionally use the handles that run from the B-pillar to above the rear door to help herself in or out. It occurs to me that with the vehicle higher and the steps being different, she might not be able to reach that handle as easy as before. So I came up with the possibility of adding some sort of handle either between that one and the one over the backdoor or one hanging down just from the handle over the back door, yet won't yank out the factory handles (which I doubt would happen, but...).

A quick Googling produced all sorts of grab handles, either Velcro, buckle, or snap attached; some intended to be attached to a roll bar which we lack, some to be bolted in place, and the RV/bus type that might be bolted on the outside (no, but thanks on that last type). I also came across this website ( strapworks.com ) where you can design your own handles, straps, etc., with lots of possibilities and at reasonable prices.

The factory handles haven't been and won't be used to support her entire weight and I'm not sure how much weight they would support. (If anybody does know, just in case, please let me know?) Any added handle would also not be used as a monkey bar.

My questions to you:

- Has anyone added grab handles where I am asking?

- Has anyone added handles elsewhere on an 80 (or other vehicle, any info might help)? I ask about elsewhere (maybe way in the back?) since that might be a possibility down the road.

- If yes to either of the above, what was used?

- Does this sound safe?

- Other options?

Any information will be helpful, and thanks in advance!

(Mods: If this in the wrong forum, please let me know and I will gladly relocate it. Thanks!)

it's kinda like a playground toy, having to climb into the rig, why wouldn't they want to do it?

Just loop an old belt through the existing grab handle and buckle it. In a couple of years or when she has a growing spurt take the belt off.

I have sliders, lifted about 2" on 315's, and both my 5 year old and 8 year old can get in by themselves.

Yes, so can she, she just occasionally uses the handles while slinging her backpack/sports stuff, etc in/out, and I'm considering something easier to reach for her. But, thanks for the info on your set-up for comparison.

Is there much, if any, of a step integrated into your sliders? I see that some do and some not so much.

Thanks!

Yeah, when I mentioned the idea of grab handles, she said she's fine without them but they would make getting in/out of it more fun.

Nice! Cheap and effective...I like that! Thanks!

So far no mentions on stress on the existing handles/mount points...

The old-belt solution sounds perfect.

My son, now six, has been climbing into our 80 since he was three. 315's, OME Heavies and Slee Sliders. No problem for him to get into the rig, and sometimes he opens the ash-trays on the rear doors to use as a grab handle. Prepared him for the climbing gym where he spent two plus hours going up and down the walls last Sunday...I was more tired than he was at the end.

The sliders have a kickout right at the rear doors, with some mesh welded on top.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, I've seen where they have various shaped kickouts, steps, etc, seems most could have mesh or something similar tacked onto the top.

My 4 and 6 year old girls get in and out by themselves fine. They seem to enjoy it. I have OME 2.5", 33's, and Slee step sliders. They just grab onto the door handle and the inside of the cab to pull themselves up.
