This forum is great if you have spent 2 years saving money for the conversion of all conversions.
Like many out there, I am not in that camp with my stock 84 FJ60.

If you have some knowledge on less expensive motor swaps, please share your thoughts. For example, can a 3FE be swapped into a 2F with minimal conversion costs? Are there other Toyota motors that install easier than American V8 motors?

I think a 3FE would be the easiest switch - and I'm just speculating here. With the older 60, there's a spacing issues if you're going to put in one of the 5 spd trannies, but it works fine on newer 60s - I think they made a change in '85. Not positive on this. Anyway, that leads me to believe that there may be some issues with lining up the transmission/drive line.

You'd also have to put all of the computer and smog equipment in the 60, too, for the 3FE. But, as I understand it, if you put a new FI Chevy engine in it, you have to do that too.

I'm not sure why you'd go from the 2f to the 3fe - it would still be trouble with not a lot of gained benefit (don't get me wrong, I love the idea of fuel injection...but still, there's not that much more HP, torque, or mileage) - if I were to convert, and go for the easy route with little hastle, I think I'd try to find a Toyota diesel to put in. At least then you'd get some mileage out of the thing...I think there's an I6 diesel that went into the BJ60s, not positive though, but I wonder if they'd pass emissions here in the US?

Someone else on this forum alerted me to the following website as a good source for diesels. http://www.gscruiserparts.com/engines.html

Don't think they'd be inexpensive, but IMO the way to go if you don't want the 3FE, which would probably be the cheapest. I like my 3FE- except for gas mileage.

There was an article in Trails a few years ago where a guy swapped a 3FE into a 60. Went well in the end but was a alot of work to make the wiring harness work right, try a search at LCML.

I forgot about the wiring...

If you went with the BJ60's diesel, you could probably get a BJ60's wiring harness and stick it in...with the 3FE, you'd have to butcher what you've got, or have one custom built (read $$$$)

I was curious about the 3FE in place of a 2F because I have access to two good motors, relatively cheap. Also, I was reading on another post that the motor mounts for the 2F actually fit the 3FE mounts. But, I don't know about cooling, wiring, transmission, etc.

Cooling shouldn't be a problem at all with a good radiator...with the one that I bought for mine, I'd bet you could put a V8 behind it, and it would be happy.

Getting the motor is one thing, but all the crap that goes with the FI would be another chunk of change altogether.

You can exhange the front mounts 2F/3F-E (though the 3F-E mounts have different accessory holes). Cooling isn't as much of an issue as I thought it'd be. I run a new 3 core radiator and that's a small one on a 40. No issues on the tranny, just a LOT of wiring.
