I thought I'd start a thread to discuss strategies to increase the horsepower and acceleration performance of the 200 series. I know there are a few threads about superchargers, though I haven't found a lot of recent news in regards to them. Also wondering if there are other upgrades people have done or considered to increase performance.

Anyone done anything or have any ideas?

Sure - many easy things that anyone can do:

1. Hit the gym and lose some of those Covid pounds
2. Remove third row seats
3. Never fill your gas tank more than half full

You get the idea...

As with any naturally aspirated vehicle, the common mods are intake, header, and exhaust. Weight reduction. I think all can be found for our platform. It may not give huge gains that may be completely worthwhile, but that's for you to decide. I'd expect something in the 15-30 wheel hp range if all were done.

Intake
I recall someone talking about fitting a Tundra specific intake.

Header - both long and short headers can be had from Dug Thorley

Exhaust - I do believe there are some in the market


There are at least a couple forced induction options that don't seem to be completely turn key from a single company yet, at least in respect to ECU tuning.

Engine mods to increase horsepower will invariably lead to shorter engine life. It will wear out faster. The vehicle was designed by engineers who maxed out performance, reliability and durability based on precise specs. Now if it’s just a cheap used knock around car go for it, but if it’s fairly new and you want to keep it for many trouble free years I wouldn‘t mod the engine. Even brand new engines from the factory that have superchargers or turbos won’t last as long as a standard engine without them. Just my two cents.
 
Anyone see this: Toyota drives its 2,000-hp Land Cruiser to world speed record 2,000 horsepower? Toyota added two large Garrett turbochargers to the 5.7 V8, along with a bunch of reinforcements to handle the power boost.
I Didn’t click link but if this is the 230+ mph 200 series then they did a lot to make it stable at that speed, including heavy suspension modifications/lowering it. That thing is a beauty for sure.

Maybe one of those electronic pedal commander or whatever it’s called, to give you better pedal response. Doesn’t give you actual hp gain but I hear good things about how the car responds to the gas pedal.
 
Yeah, not interested in doing what toyota did in the video myself. Need to keep the full offroad capability and size, but would love shave a second off the 0 to 60. Not a need, just a desire.
 
Not to thread jack but if you want to see some serious HP attend the Mojave Mile. It is a standing mile sprint held at the same location and it's almost incredible how fast some sleeper vehicles can go.
 
Why make it something it isn’t?
Because the person that owns it wants to?

The off-road capability we already have plus a well-tuned 600hp to play in the gravel would be a sick combination, even if it’s not worth the time and money for the vast majority of us to do it and the odds are it would demolish the reliability we like so much. Plus it’d go more places than a cayenne or x5.
 
I don't think you'd be able to shave a second off that 0-60 without a turbo or supercharger...
Sure these engines aren't maxed on power being NA but getting around 5.5 for something this heavy is a task for sure! That's G65 territory

Just a heads up it already does that. Enter the proverbial rabbit hole. Gotta go faster, whoa needs to stop better, oh crap 8 MPG etc.. It is fun to play with Mr. Toyota's product though.

I wouldn’t expect it to be able to handle cornering without sacrificing the off road stuff though.

Great now it has to corner too? Mission creep, now it's a hole the size of a bear den. Just kidding of course. Life is just a series of tradeoffs, real First World problems. :rofl:

I found 4.88 gears to make it quite a spirited drive. Much more responsive particularly in 1st 2nd, 3rd off standing start and when flooring for a pass in the higher gears.
 
That thing is a rocket ship compared to my 3vze. It's got a hard time getting out of it's own way.
 
Interestingly, as the 200-series shares a great deal of driveline with the Tundra...

The Tundra has stood at the top as the fastest truck for quite awhile, when equipped with what was once a factory backed TRD Supercharger. With a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds. Even now I believe it remains as one if not the fastest "factory" truck. This stands even among many high HP factory specials like the SVT Lightning, RAM SRT-10, Raptor, or upcoming TRX.

So perhaps to chase speed in a bruiser may not be so odd? I have a been bitten hard by the speed bug so I get it, but I scratch those itches with another vehicle.

The 200-series weighs quite a bit more, with more driveline drag so it won't ever achieve those times. But the engineering to some degree of factory levels of polish and components, albeit not available as a singular kit, do exist.

505 hp, 550 lb-ft torque

If the OP is really into this, look-up Magnuson supercharger (I believe they also supplied the original TRD S/C). Engine tune calibration seems available from Unichip

I believe they are still building piggybacks..

Gonna be hard to get a real tuner to do much work on such a rare application.
