I'm buying inchworms lefty transfer case
I think I am going to do a re-gear and a front locker before considering a crawl box.

The money for the regear and front locker would double the transfer case. Also, I don't feel the need for new gears on road just off. So with the lefty transfer case it would solve my problem. As far as a front locker, I heard you must beef up some stuff.
Grouper said:I was only bringing it up because I know you were very impressed with Jacque's Taco but I think he also has a regear and a locker up front so it might be hard to get the same results he gets with just a crawl box. Just throwing that out there.
The lefty isn't even a crawl box, it just changes out hi and low a tad. But yes the point is to get away from chain driven

Just curious, but what problem are you having that you need to solve with a gear driven transfer case? Your truck seemed like it did just fine out there to me and if what you want is not a crawl box then what's the real benefit? I am not familiar with the Lefty and I am trying to figure out what the advantage is and how does it help?
The lefty adds a couple advantages for a decent price. It gets rid of the chain driven transfer case. Raises the case out of way of rocks. Also it is not a crawl box subsitute but you will crawl slower, almost half the speed. So next time I'm going down a hill I wont ride the breaks AS much, I'll still have to.
If you gear it to 4.7, it will be like having a crawl box 2.28x 2, also get twin sticks for the option of 2L. Thats what I run behind my auto's just right hand and it works out great offroad.
Have there been a lot of problems with the chain driven transfer case or at least enough to justify the need to change it? Does the extra room help if you add a transfer case skid since the skid hangs low enough to clear the stock unit? Is it better to have a higher transfer case and no skid or a lower case with a skid? Do they make a specific skid that works with a lefty to correct this? What is the price? I have only seen a handful of threads about these things so I am just trying to sort out the advantages. Is this something that I need to look into installing? I got the sense from Jacque that it was just one piece of the puzzle in his set up and not the whole picture. I too would love to give myself more advantages off pavement and I want to make sure I am not missing anything. He mentioned installing a "crawl box" in his FJ when he purchases it, was he just referring to the lefty or was he talking about something else. I am in new territory here and feel like I may be interchanging terms incorrectly.

So this is part of the reason I am confused. Is This what is meant by having a "doubler"? I am guessing that you can have a lefty geared and set up to your preference?
