So my wife got into a wreck in our 93 land cruiser (80 series). Took it to the mechanic to fix the alignment and need a new power steering gear box. He said I probably won't find a new part for that (is that true Murf?) so I should look to find a used one somewhere.

Anyone parting out a vehicle that I can buy the power steering gear box?

I was going to post here first then on the FJ80 forum.

Thanks.
Spencer

We may have a spare at the spa. What is specifically wrong with yours? They are easily rebuild-able. Even the sector shaft is replaceable. John

Answering that is beyond my knowledge. The steering wheel is now off center by almost 90 degrees. He said something like the shaft was twisted. He called his parts dealer and they said they don't even sell it. He didn't mention anything about being able to rebuild it. I sent him a text to have tell me more specifically what is wrong.

Steering wheel misalignment may be due to any, or combinations of, bent/damaged tie rod, drag link, and/or sector shaft. All of these are repairable and replaceable, depending on the particular details.

So my brother in law referred me to another mechanic. This guy is one of his friends and is factory trained by Toyota and spent 10 years as a mechanic at a local Toyota Dealership. He said the gear box is rebuild-able just as you said Inkpot. He said it isn't very difficult, just can be a little tricky in doing it. He said the issue you would have is trying to find all the internal parts to rebuild it.

He felt my best option would be either to find a used complete gear box or he might be able to find some new aftermarket gear box.

Inkpot does that seem reasonable to you? I know you haven't looked at the gearbox itself so its probably hard for you to make that judgement call.

You can get it rebuilt, or buy a used one from the likes of Spector, Cruiserparts , Cruiseryard, etc

Even the aftermarket (which are rebuilds) are very pricey.

If inkpot has a spare laying around and sounds like he is offering it up ? sounds like a good option

Benchworks in Scottsdale usually has at least one or two rebuilt boxes ready to go. Give them a call. Just be sure to get an 80 series box, NOT a 60 series, as they are really close in appearance. The 60 series has a shorter input shaft. Of course they can also rebuild yours for about $225 +/-
