in-cab winch controls question

I have read and read on this question. There are several manufacturers that sell pre-made in-cab winch controls but some people say that they do not want to have to keep their finger on the dash while getting jerked around by the winch. Some people say to use an old hand controller and wire it in and leave it in the glove box.

My question is this... if I can find one of these...


can I just mount one of these receptacles in the cab and plug in the same winch controller in either the front of the truck or the cab of the truck just not at the same time? I don't know why I would ever need two controllers at the same time anyway.

Will it work for in-cab controls?

I have one of his winch controllers on my 40. It is Soooooo nice to use. I am pretty dense most of the time so having something that is just there and ready to go at a moments notice is a good thing..

Dont think you can get the old style connector from Warn, i tried that here in germany but had to convert to the newer style male-female, while i had to do that anyway i installed a small remote switch on the stickshift.

Its not Warn and usually made for ATV´s ... but a small clamp did the trick, now you can rest your hand on the shiftball and winch with two fingers.

Did the wiring straight to the winch, ignore that plug on the picture!

Dont think you can get the old style connector from Warn

Actually, I found one today local. For future reference, mine maybe aftermarket, but I looked at it and it is just a 4 wire round trailer plug. If mine is factory, it was actually sourced from a company called Hoppy or Hopkins as they are now called.

I found the plug I needed at a Tractor Supply in the trailer parts section. $4.59 plus tax.

Another question for the group. In that picture, can you see how the end of the cable is doubled over and has those U bolt looking clamps on it? What kind of business could I contact locally that would be able to put the thimble back in the loop and install a more factory like crimp or swage on the end? I am racking my brain and can't think of a place. I went to home depot and they sell a crimper and the ferrules but they only go up to 3/16 and I have 5/16 cable on there.

Any suggestions?

Look up wire rope in the phone book.

Or, even better, get a synthetic rope for it..

Man , that synthetic rope is pure sexy but if I did that I might have more in the rope than in the winch. It would cost me over $300 to replace the cable and the cable is actually in pretty good shape.

industrial supply store should be able point you in a direction for the cable fix. I have a trailer four plug to countrol my 8274 it only uses three wires, brought the wires into the cab with an extension cord its three wires and insulated a double throw switch on/off/on finished it off . Easy job should be no problem to wire the recriever in the cab

How is this so much better than just running a designated line in the cab?

Why not make it simplier?

I guess I do not understand why it would be beneficial to have two plugs that need to be played with..

I agree with mace the remote in the cab could just be run in from the front why wire it in. If your worried about the switch on the dash move it somewhere easier to reach seat bracket or I liked the idea of the shifter but dont run my winch nearly enough for that besides I have a throttle switch there. Ive never had a problem holding the switch on the dash but Im 6'4" so wing span is no problem. You can get a switch you dont have to hold but that can create problems of its own. Other than that you will have to use one hand to run the winch no matter if you use a switch in the cab or the warn controller pluged in at the front bumper or in the cab

The in cab remote is a wonderful and helpful thing to have when winching. Winching in the snow, while your spotter spools out your winch rope etc, etc. Or winching alone.

I cannot stress how important it is to have a sandbag or other weight on your winch line when winching under a load. (I run synthetic)

All I did is install an "enable" or arm switch and a toggle switch with center off, spring loaded return up = on and spring return on in the down position.

12 volt positive wires to the middle contact of the switch. One conductor to the out one to the in on the winch solenoids. My switches are located on the very far left of the drivers side dash. I made an L shaped sheet metal bracket for the switches and drilled / mounted it to the defroster lip by the window. Cake.

OK, I called an industrial supply place and they told me they would sell me the stuff to do it myself. Of course it was like $400. I asked them.."who do you sell that stuff to?" and he gave me the name of a place that does a lot of oilfield work. I took my winch by their shop and they had it fixed like the factory in about 5 minutes. They didn't even charge me. Sweet.

Mace, you are right. I have enough cable to lay it across the hood of the truck and just plug it into the original plug on the winch. There is no need for two plugs. I saw the 12voltguys stuff and I liked it but it was going to set me back about $100 shipped. I also saw the roadlessgear.com one and it was more reasonble but I just don't know where I would put either one of them. I dont really want to drill a bunch of new holes in my dash.
On my 77, on the left side of the steering wheel, under the dash, I have warning lights. On the right side of the wheel I have the e-brake handle so I can't really mount it under the dash.

Thanks for the pictures FJ40Garage, I see what needs to be done to have controls on the dash. I tried to read the description but it must be spanish or something. I like that switch that you used on your gear shift. I may have to look for one of those.
