Not sure I know how to improve the mileage, but I will tell you that not doing your recomended maintinance does become an issue. So make sure your vehicle has good fluids/belts/hoses etc. Thier are several lists on here.

Also, check behind the glove box and see if you have the Air Filter slot to put the LX air filter in. Search LX Cabin filter. some 03's have it some don't.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy this group as much as i have. They have taught me more than I knew I didn't know. lol

Do like I did.......Cut the engine and tell your wife to get out and push :) :) ;)

That way you can cancel her gym membership and save the $45.00 a month.

Then with all the money you saved, get the ARB bull bar, Slee Rear bumper, AO roof rack, slee sliders and some 33"tires.....tell the wife that all that additional weight will add to the foward momentum and keep your LC going longer with less gas :) :) :)

Couldn't add to what the others have already posted so I thought I would just be a wise ass.........Love my 03!!!!!! Have fun in yours!!!!!

Also, remember to keep some perspective.

If you run the average 12,000 miles per year, the difference between 15mpg and 17mpg is $283. The difference between a lowly 11mpg and the more typical 15mpg, again across 12,000 miles, is $872. That's real money, $2.39 per day, but depending on your budged you may not have to yourself up for stepping on the happy pedal every now and then. :]

And if you do find any accessories to increase fuel mileage, make sure that you calculate the ROI first.

I put a K&N cold air system in and gained about 2 mpg. It might just be with the 8 or so extra hp I'm softer on the gas. Although it sounds real nice when you get into the gas, (my teenagers like it). I average a solid 16 mpg with a mix of about 50/50 town highway. Keeping the tires at the max pressure for the tire did help.

Which K&N system? Was it just the drop in replacement, or was it a different intake?

I'd do it if gave me anything too.

In the meantime, I drive downhill all the time with a tailwind and the wife pushes sometimes too.

I am trying to decrease the sound level inside my LX470 and have considered removing the factory roof cross bars.

Who has done this and what did you notice after they were removed? Quieter above XXmph? Better fuel mileage?

These comments below are very encouraging!

Keep the cross-bars off the roof. They decrease gas mileage 5-10 % on the highway, depending on the speed.

I slid the front roof cross bar to the back over the weekend before setting out on my looooooooong drive. I did notice improved gas mileage. One tank of gas gave me 16mpg, which is the most I have received so far. In winter, with the cross bar in the front, I used to average as little as 12mpg on the highway. Next, I am going to take both the crossbars out.

I've moved mine all the way to the back. It is quieter. I can't vouch for improved mpg. If you take yours off, please take pictures. I haven't taken the time to figure out how to remove them yet.

remove the side rails, take a foot off each side and slide the cross bars off. replace feet, re-install side rails.

Momentum is your friend...

You will basically have to remove the whole roof rack to get them off.
They slide into the main rails so you will have to remove the rear mounts to get them off. However you can't just remove the rear mounts as they need to slide rearward in order to come up.(also need to slide rearward in order for them to unhook from the middle center support) In order to get them to move you need to unbolt the front supports as well.

It took me about 6 tries to mount my roof rack in the correct order when i put mine on.

I also find it extremely hard to believe that the cross bars alone would affect the mileage by up to 10% as one poster mentioned. I noticed zero change in MPG when i installed the factory roof rack ( 100 came with no rack)

Another thing you might want to consider when taking ownership, is to disconnect the battery for a little while and then reconnect it, start the vehicle and let it idle for 15 minutes so that the ECU can re-calibrate. I have noticed MPG gains after doing this. Maybe b/c my driving habits were different than the PO?
