Hi,

Hope someone will have an answer for the question. I called 2 different Export Control offices and got 2 different answers. One place is stating that the title has to notarized and the other one told me it's not neccessary, just bring the original title and a bill of sale.

Thank you,
Alex

sen a pm to semlin or riley,
they both imported their cruisers into BC.
of course this might change by jusdiction.

Maybe Crushers at Luxury Imports would know? I believe their cars come from a lot farther away, but the rules might be the same.

Mine was signed .... god damn lucky I had it in my hand when I surprised the dealership in Houston and picked it up in person. The girl grabbed it quick to fill in what she missed the first time she sent it to me ... said she screwed up a number of them and had to get them sent back to her for correction .. didn't go into specifics...

no need to notarize the title but it should be signed over by the vendor to buyer. you do have to give them a fax of the title 48 or 72 hours (can't remember) in advance of trying to cross so they can run their checks . they will accept a fax for the purpose of running the checks provided you have the original title when you get to the border. The us customs guys do stamp stuff all over it once you are approved for export.

a word of advice, find one customs agent in the export department and stick with them and avoid dealing with another one even if there is a shift issue. i found every one of them had a different set of rules.

Simon,

At the border, when I will present the original title, should it already be signed by the seller, which is me in this instance, right?

Alex

I didn't get mine notarized, it wasn't even suggested. They need 72 hours, but working hours, not over a weekend or holiday. Not sure but you may need to have the buyers signature as well. HTH, Greg.

Alex,

Did you find a customs office in your downtown? Between them , the RIV and Toyota USA I was able get answers to all my questions. Better to get it from the horses mouth....regs could have changed since some of us imported our 80's.

Cheers,

TY

EDIT: Ok, I just reread your dilema. Two differing answers. I'd ask to speak to the senior guy .. lay out what info you've received so far and that it's conflicting.

alex unless you are importing the vehicle personally you need to have signed it over by the time customs gets it

Tyler,

I called the Export Control office (headquarters in Washington DC) and was told that there is no "written procedure" that applies to all service ports. Even within the same state like New York, Service Port at Buffalo has its own regulations and the Service Port in Champlain (BIG PITA!!) has it's own. When I called Champlain, first time I was told that I have to sign the title and don't have to notarize it. When I called the second time, the other guy told me that both the buyer and the seller have to sign the title and I have to notarize it. Decided to find another Service Port which is closer to Montreal and found one in Richford, VT. Called and spoke to a very nice women and she told me just fax her the title and I didn't even have to sign it. I will be dealing with her on 6/13 and I will update you guy how it worked.

Thanks,
Alex

Simon,

Now I understand it correctly. I will meet my sister in law after the Export Control office stamped the title and sign it over to her before we both show up at Canadian customs.

Thanks,
Alex
