Was doing some reading on diesel lately. Apparently, the new Sulfer requirements have drastically increased the price of refinement. It's still less than gasoline to produce, but marginally. So there is some inherent markup difference that, to me, is ridiculous. Between availability and price, I just don't see diesel really catching on the way we wish it would here in the US
If it is cheaper to produce why is it costing more. This is a perfect example of our own governements regulations making our country weaker and weaker every day. Without a cheap energy source our country can not compete. EVERYTHING in this country is moved by diesel. Trains/Trucks/Ships they all take diesel. Much more and the economy is going to just grind to a halt. The EPA needs its peepee smacked in a big way.
Diesels really had something going for them a few years ago. VW was dominating the market and even BMW jumped back in the game and Mercedes is even offering the S class with a diesel. Even GM is comming out with a passenger car next year. Jeep will be out with a VMotori engine in the jeep next year as well. But between all of the emissions regulations (6.4L diesel truck got 12 MPG) and the price of fuel the added cost of maintenance on a generally more reliable engine, and the cost of the fuel totally negating the fuel savings, everyone is going to run away again which is to bad as diesel is the way to go.
Yesterday I went out to an old farm to help a buddy out and start up a tractor that had been sitting 7 years. A couple hours and freeing the engine up, add a battery and it started right up. And that was with fuel in the tank that was just as old. Then we removed the battery as it doesn't need it to run and we took off and got to work. So sad
