I guess I drained all the transmission fluid. What an idiot I am. What transmission fluid do i need and how much?

Up to 4 qts T-4 or WS compatible, assuming it was properly filled. M1 is good for the T-4, OEM for the WS.

At least you got a bonus drain/fill.

Can I just refill with the drained fluid? It's only 3 months old :( @BuckeyeFan

The oil catch bin I used was brand new and had no fluids in it previously. I'm thinking, since the fluid was fresh (4.5k miles) and in a catch bin that was brand new, I could just pour it right back in.

Cheap, I know. But.....I'm frugal

Sure, you can reuse clean oil.

IDK, I suppose, if it hasn't been sitting out with debris blowing into it. I'm OCD about gearbox fluids. Thinking I might have poured a bunch of particulate into my tranny would drive me nuts. You can get four qts of perfectly good fluid for $20-$30.

I wouldn't. The internal passages and mechanisms in an automatic transmission are quite small and can be clogged up with even tiny little pieces of debris. To me it isn't worth even a small risk of messing up your $$$ transmission.

You didn't say what year your truck is, but keep in mind that the WS fluid is for the five speed. The earlier four-speed transmission takes regular atf. I used Valvoline maxlife extended synthetic

Hahahaha!

I did the same thing when I first bought my truck!!

I feel ya brother!

2003 five speed calls for T4. Because why keep it simple.

It's a 98 LX. Guess I'll make a trip to Wally World and get some transmission fluid. Once I do that, I have a fence that blew over last night to fix. What a Sunday it is turning out to be :(

I think I just did the same thing on my 06 LX470. Just so I can confirm that I am also an idiot, is this the transmission fluid drain plug?

Positive, good excuse to top off with fresh fluid. Good alternative tranny fluid, try valvoline maxlife.

@geanes You don't have to use WS, since you have the older A343F (98-2002) 4spd Transmission; I stand to be corrected but I think Dexron II, III. A good option is Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

Imagine draining the trans fluid and not knowing, then fill up the crank case with 7qts of oil, then drive off with 14 qts of oil and zero trans fluid. lol oh the carnage

ive seen them come in the other way from iffy lube, drain the oil double fill the trans. no idea how they did that but the truck made it a few miles before the motor locked up

s*** like that happen all the time when unqualified tech work on the car. Even the dealer sometimes!!

I read a good drain and fill takes a couple trans fluid changes not that far apart, so you can cross that off the list.
