This is 100% true. I counted days to getting away when I lived there. I don’t really feel the need to go any more.

I totally get that.
My "need" to go is based on missing my Yota buddies. The wheeling is secondary for me.
As a Hoosier it is my pleasure to insulate Michigan from Kentucky.

Thanks. We do appreciate that.

@jimkyser Thanks for the info about how much it costs.

@Gumby @slander Good to hear some more intel on living there.

Not sure I understand what made y'all want to leave so bad though. Quality of life has a lot of variables. Is there something about the area in general that I may be missing? Again I'm not talking about Chicago the city. I'm talking about the burbs. Thanks fellas

After living in the worst run state in the union for 30+ years, you see things you can't unsee. It is so corrupt its disgusting.

Like the CPS funding solution. My local school my daughter will be attending had 73% of its funding removed by the state, and shifted to bail out the most miss managed public school system in the nation. States solution? Just have the suburbs affected make up the difference in property taxes. The same property taxes that are already some of the highest in the nation.

You get taxed on everything. Jim's costs are a little off, regular plate renewal just cost me $121. On top of that I pay close to $40 on tolls weekly, high gas prices despite the volume of refineries right here due to taxes, and higher insurance because of the number of uninsured motorists and accidents in chicagoland. Don't forget they doubled the state income tax last year in June and retracted it back to January. Yup, had to write a check to the state again in March.

If you want to work for the state it's probably great. We do have the highest number of government employees pulling in 6 figures with an awesome pension, that is woefully under funded.

Want to own a firearm? Gotta get your FOID card.

Why am I still here? It's where our family is. But that is holding me back less and less.

I just moved to ChicagoLand 18 months ago. Those that complain that it is expensive here have never lived in California! Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, everything feels like it is on sale here as cost of living is 20-30% less. Housing, gas, insurance, groceries... my car registration in CA was $800 a year, here $114. In Silicon Valley we rented a 1,300sq/ft house built in 1957 with no updates or a yard for $4000/mo before utilities. Now we own 5,000sq/ft on 4 acres of land with a lake, pool and tennis courts and all in (mortgage, tax, ins) we are paying less that we did in rent...
In CA the schools are crap, the roads are crap, the median home cost is $1m. State income tax is 10% and you will pay 1.1% on that outrageous home value each year.

In Chicago the winters are harsh, yes, but the quality of living is quite good in my opinion. We live in the Northwest area (Barrington) maybe 7 miles North of Hoffman Estates. I work on the Northshore in Lake Forest. The schools here are excellent. You pay a lot in property tax but feel like you get something for your money (not like in CA).
If you are one of the Texans that is really into guns make sure you understand the laws here. For all the fuss people make about Illinois and guns, it is NOTHING compared to CA. Just get a FOID card (online, easy) and own what you want. Anyone can get a concealed carry license after completing a 3 day class. (Impossible in CA to get CCW) I live in an un-incorporated area and could shoot on my property if I wanted.
PM me if you have specific questions or want to get on the phone.

@joez Thanks for more details. Sounds like everything is more expensive which I'm sure my fiance's family knows all about.

@UCrazyKid Good insight as well. I would never move to CA because I know how expensive it is. Also, more importantly, the 60 isn't legal. I'm not a crazy gun-toting Texan. All y'all thinking that are crazy lol. I have one firearm. Have my "License to Carry" here in Tejas. Concealed is a thing of the past. I see guns out in the open all the time.

There is no open carry here.

@UCrazyKid I know open carry isn't a thing in IL. I was just sayin' :D

I couldn't take the traffic and constant stress. My 4 mile commute took me the same time as my 20 mile commute does now. My wife never had less than a 1 hour drive. I was in a nice area, although not nearly as nice as Barrington, and it was just constant stressed out people all the time. everybody drives like a complete a****** all the time because you have to. I worked at one of the best schools in the nation and heard nothing but constant griping from parents how much they were paying in taxes. To be fair, property taxes are insane. Not California insane, but I paid about 7k for 0.25 acres compared to 1k now for 60 acres. School suck major ass here, but my kids are out so I could care less.

All that being said I'd live there before Houston.

Outdoor activities suck here, it's expensive, constantly being raped in the form of taxes and fees that line the pockets of obvious criminals (politicians), traffic sucks, and the people here are idiots. I'm stuck here because of work and where I want to live there is not much to support our quality of life. So I need to bend over and keep getting fisted because not very deep down I hate myself.

Rumor is they are moving our HQ to the northern burbs in the next few years, if that happens I'm moving to WI and commuting. I have a personal commitment to not buy another piece of property in this state.

I’m another one moving from Chicago to Dallas. Spent most of my life here and I’m done. Got a great opportunity and I am gone. No more rust repairs, taxes and freaking cold. I will take 100f in summer over -20 in winter. I live in Park Ridge and they kept tweeking the multiplier rate every year so my taxes increase 1k per year and then every 3 years I was re assessed that now I am paying 22k per year. Just sold my house and the poor guy will be paying probably close to 26k in prop taxes.

I already found an off-road Park an hour away from Dallas. My hundy is gonna really love it there. To the OP - good luck moving here but I think you are going to regret it - I do understand you are doing it for the family but it’s gonna cost you.

I live so close to IA I can see it from my street corner. On this side of the state, most of our problems are because of Chicago...

To the OP -I think I was too negative in my post. Who am I to say you will regret your decision, only you will know. I will say that you should try to spend time in Chicago doing daily things you would do if you lived here. If you have the time that is. Unfortunately you missed the winter when it’s brutally cold. Good luck with whatever you do decide. Cheers

Political issues aside, unless you like doing things with corn cobs, the types of things tony begs for, or boating there is just about zip to do outdoors.
