-- I'm at Landtank's house in Mass with my '91, and we're awaiting deliveries tomorrow containing a birf from C-Dan in NM and axle shafts from Photoman in PA --

-- great people we have here -- more to come!

:)

PS - Mrs. Landtank cooks up some fine supper too :D

Did the axle shafts get grooved? Why did they need to be replaced?

eric here:

both shafts were pretty grooved -- think the seals were original, brittle and thus shot, so
they burned in to the inner axle diameters -- pictures forthcoming --

-- we broke an outer axle/birf ring and are trying to get it delta-dashed from NM to MA -- i've got 5 puppies from WV being delivered to me tonight in CT at a rest-stop --

-- ugh -- never thought i'd get drama along with this -- something'll work -- ;)

Rick here,
The birf didn't break. When we pulled the axle apart the PS (short side) birf had some issues. The splines on the drive flange side were worn almost down to nothing and the flange itself was worn so the valleys where twice as wide as they were supposed to be. So that birf needed to be replaced. Because of the ergency of the situation in trying to get 2 axles and a birf with flange to the house on Saturday nobody, until later on, thought of the spring clips that hold the inner axles to the birf. Well on the long side 4 hits with a hammer and it was apart. However on the short side it took 20 or so, full on "You Mother Fxxxer" hits with a 3 lb sledge to get it apart and the clip was worthless. So now CDan has Next flight out the parts to complete the job. They arrive at Logan at 1:21 am.

As Dan is preparing for a week of vacation I find it humbling that he would offer to get us those parts at this time with this much effort. It is truley above and beyond and reasonable expectation and words can't express our gratitude. And as far as his wife, she must be a saint

>> she must be a saint <<

She is. :D

FWIW, everyone should have a few of those inner axle clips in the spare parts bin. We all think of the big pieces but it's the little details that will get the truck back on the trail when something fails.

I agree we should have had the clips available and I think Dan now includes them in his kits but this just got by us, what can I say. s*** Happens. Even after this episode I'll probably wait to start stocking these types of pieces for emergencies until I start wheeling more. Don't see a big need to tear down an axle on the side of RT 95.

eric here:

clap clap clap --

-- my outer clip-ring is here (to hold the axle in the birf) plus two new washers --

-- went from NM to GA to OH to MA -- sent by faithful c-dan yesterday, on his day off via Delta Direct or something like that --

-- ms. landtank will be happy to see me depart, though it's been fun -- :)

fingers crossed!
