Hey all...

Just passed another frustrating weekend trying to get the cruiser to run right!! for some reason some of the sparks are working erratically...I'm assuming it should be something to do with the distributor cap or wires, but both were changed recently....it's only the #3 and #4 that don't fire all the time...I'm not sure what type cap I got but i'm thinking it's probably best to buy some original toyota cap/rotor/wires and see what happens.

Any thoughts??

The pictures look great, what kind of distance did you cover?

Yeah, go buy a Toyota cap, button and wires. That will rule that out at least. Let us know what happens.

Later,

Lesson #1:

buy original Toyota parts!!

Jeff, you were right....got some original ignition wires and they fit like a glove on the distributor cap...100% improvement. Unfortunately, the new cap/button were a different model so i'll have to order them again.

The cruiser runs sweet now, but backfires when driving, tomorrow will do some tune up and install the new points...my neighbors are gonna kick my ass if I work on her anymore tonight!

I think Greg has a cap a button that might fit that truck. They are Heaths that I gave to Greg to give back to Heath. Whew! That has to be incorrect grammar. Give Greg a call. He might still have them.

Later,

sounds like a plan.

BTW, should the vacume advance hose be on or off when adjusting the timing. I thought it should not change when idling, but mine advances when i hook it up!

Surgery is so much easier!!

Heath has them. I usually do as I'm told, and Jeff told me to give them to Heath.

Well it was worth a shot, thanks though...

I gotta wait to order some tierod ends anyway...I'm hoping monday is not a holiday so i can get them soon.

the Croil is great, but it has not solved my differential drain problem so i took the whole cover off and i'm gonna drill it out...the oil in there was sad looking...I think it's the original oil from 1974.

Everything on this truck is stuck...took the tie rods out and not even a torch/croil could loosen the ends up...it's like they're welded in place.

Heath was trying to sell them. Call him and see if he still has tham. They are Toyota parts and are still in the box. Where are you buying tie rod ends? James just bought a set from Cool Cruisers. Try www.coolcruisers.com and check the price before you buy Toyota parts for that.

Later,

finally got the damn differential screw out, got a torch and a screw extractor and got mideval on it's ass...one down one to go

i bought some tie rod ends from advance auto when i first got the cruiser, big mistake...very cheap...i want to get some from toyota just to get them here soon...i'm on vacation this week and i want to get as much work finished as i can.

Is Heath on this website...I'd gladly buy them from him if they'll fit.

How about removing the tie rod ends from the rods, any thoughts...I'm thinking of taking them to a shop or something and getting it over with...I soaked them in Croil and heated the s*** out of them then tried to unskrew them with a pipe wrench...no luck

I don't have his number. PM Greg or Jess to get it. I know they have it.

Later,

Hey guys - I still have the distributor cap and rotor if you need - brand new. How about $10??

Give me a call - 601.497.7489

Heath

SOLD!

Heath, I left you a message on your voice mail. Call me at 601 209-0927 whenever you get a chance.

Finally got the tie rod ends off...did not realize they were reverse thread!!

lesson #2

buy toyota parts!

sure enough all i needed was an original cap/rotor and now all the sparks are firing. The old cap was slightly loose and the rotor not fitting right.'

I'm installing the steering box i got from Jeff today and I should be good to go!

Thanks again for your help Jeff.

Glad to help. Now that you have it running right, you have to drive it to the meeting next Tues.

Thanks - I'm a bit slow to pick up new things......

Well the steering box is working great...but the ignition is screwing up again, the engine is running much better but still missfiring. very dependant on how the dsitributor cap is sitting. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and just getting an electronic ignition setup!

anybody out there has any advice?

thanks

Sani

Sounds like you have a part missing. Have you looked for an exploded view of the dist? Try www.SOR.com or www.tpi4x4.com and they might have a picture of your dist. ??? Someone in the club probably has that dist.

Later,

What if the dist. shaft is worn & not holding time...

so what would I need to do besides putting another distributor in??
