Ok mudders I have some issues, like usual. This morning the ignition key broke off in the ignition. However, for some reason I was able to push the broken key into the ignition and start the vehicle. So I run around and get a new ignition lock from O'Reilly and get home and replace it.

Very straightforward job and got to teach the boy a couple of things. However, after getting everything together I go to start the vehicle and all it does is try to turn over but won't actually turn over. :( I take everything apart and put in the old ignition lock with the broken key and same result. So that is where I sit now. :bang:

All the parts are put back in place, screws put back in everything. I can't think of what the problem might be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Oh and all the electronics are working. What I meant by trying to turn over is the starter is working but it just won't turn over.

it has to do with the radio frequency (rf) security system; there is an rf chip in the key, and an rf reciever near the key hole. There is a circular shaped antenna device around the ignition keyhole, and if it does not detect the rf chip in the key, then the computer cuts fuel to the engine. Check to make sure everything is plugged in correctly around the ignition keyhole. Does the red 'security' light on the dashboard turn off when you put the key in the ignition?

Is your battery flat? you can check the immobiliser function by checking that the flashing key light goes out. Not sure what you mean though that it tries to turn over but wont. Does the engine turn over but just not fire up or the engine doesn't turn over?

@marshotel The security light by the clock does not turn off when I insert the key. Also, I see the green light near the ignition come on then turn off when I put the key in.

@Julian Stead I am not sure what you mean by is my battery flat? Yes the engine tries to turn over, the starter is working, but it won't catch. I do not see the flashing key light near the clock turn off.

I've attached two pics to this, the broken key is my "orginal" key I got with the truck. It doesn't look like an Toyota key to me. The other pic is the keys that came with the ignition lock from O'Reilly.

Thanks for the replies.

Have you programmed the new key to your vehicle ? If not you need to do this but may need to unhook the battery for a couple minutes or so to do a reset if you've tried it a couple times

@slacker24-7 I have not programmed the key. Honestly not sure how to do it. I'll look that up and see if I can do that.

yes, that is your issue then. hold your old key next to the other when trying to start it. You just need to programme the transponder chip by the looks of it.

@Julian Stead I tried that, holding the old key next to the new key and that did not work. I am going to re-install the old ignition lock and see if that works. I tried searching online and could not find a way to reprogramme the new key. I found this thread and from the looks of it it wasn't the right way to do it:

Programming a Transponder Key for 99 TLC

If you are trying to use the key with the open remote holes, I believe that is the issue. Take the remote guts from the broken key and put into the new key and try.

Make sure the transponder aerial(receiver) is plugged in as well, this is the ring that goes around the ignition barrel with a green light.

Update @Julian Stead @Dwight S so I got the truck to start. The issue was I was keeping all three of the keys from the new ignition lock together with the old key as I tried to start it. However, I took one of the hollow keys off and held the old key next to that one by itself and it worked. Like Dwight S said I need to take the guts out of the old key and put them in one of the hollow keys.

Thanks everyone for all of your help walking me through all of this. I thought I was looking at having to get a new ECU and drop tons of money into the LC.

Glad it worked out. I was going from experience. Broke a key and my truck wouldn’t start until I taped the remote back together. I tried holding the remote guts against the key, but no luck.

@Julian Stead yep panic over! Thanks for the help!

@Dwight S me too! Next step is to remove the guts from the old key. For now, I'll just have to hold them together to start the truck. Thaks for the advice and the help.

Super simple, just those micro screws on the back of the key housings. 5 minutes and you’re done. I’d lay out a white paper towel to work on, just so you don’t lose a screw.
