If its not a bad starter, then what is it? (1 Viewer)

I pulled the starter from our 1995 V6 4runner last week and had it tested at the local autoparts store. Turns out its good..... We had to push start it to get it going before. battery is good. When we tried to start it , it maked a click, click, click noise. After a couple of times, there would be fewer clicks. Seemed like it was the starter, but if its good,,,,

What else could it be?

if you still have the starter out, pull the back cover off of the solenoid and check the contacts. this is a very common problem to your symptom. and yes the starter can randomly work properly. you can buy the contacts at any decent parts store NAPA, CARQUEST.... probably cost around $6-$10. its also possible that there is a voltage drop between the battery and the starter. or on the odd chance the ground for the engine block is bad. good luck

Your symptoms sound exactly what I was experiencing with my 4runner earlier this year. However in my case it turned out to be the battery. If it's not the bat, I would also look at the starter contacts.

Clean up your battery posts and cable connections while you're under the hood. Bet it's the contacts and brushes though.

My money's on the solenoid contacts. Roger of 4crawler has an excellent writeup on that on his site, and sells the contacts as well!

I'll bet you ANYTHING - that you have a bad ground. put a single jumper wire (like just black side of a set of jumper cables) from the battry casing to the negative side of the battery. I bet your trucks starts fine.

i was going threw a set or contacts 1 a month or so, tured out to be the starter relay pulled it apart to find out the switch was worn out replaced it and have not had any problems since granted this was a 88 4runner but you may have a starter relay to look for too!

Get a load test done on Battery!
