Dealership is quoting me 300 dollars to replace idler pulley. 100 bucks for the part and 200 for the labor. This seems high.

A bad idler pulley creates a whine that is very noticeable.

I was able to replace my starter contacts using the IH8MUD FAQ and that was quite a project.

In comparion, replacing the Idler pulley seems like it would be easy.

But, I dont where the idler pulley is on the belt. Can someone please direct me towards it?
Thanks!!!

If its the drive belt pulley you don't need to replace the works you can just replace the $10 bearing

My FSM says that there are two idler pullies. Idler pulley #1 up and to the left of the crankshaft timing pully. Pulley #2 is up and to the right of the crankshaft timing pulley. They are the ones without teeth.

The 2 pulleys you speak of are for the TB

Do you have the part# for that bearing Phil ?

My guess is that it`s the serpentine belt idler pulley#2 ( part# 16604-0F010) it runs around 80 bucks. It`s one of the few pulleys that actually fail on the 4.7`s now and then ...

That`s the tensioner .. DONT change just the pulley on the tensioner, be sure to replace the entire assy :)

My bad fellas...I am about to roll over 180,000, so I have Timing Belts on the brain. I figured since it was hard to see, it's probably the timing belt.:whoops:

I ended up haggling with the dealership and got them do the whole thing for 175. 90 bucks for part and 85 labor. I need to get this repaired before I travel for the holidays otherwise I would have done it myself. Perhaps this thread will be useful for someone in the future.

If you hear are a loud "whine" in the engine compartment that increases or decreases depending on the how much you throttle then you might have an idler pulley issue.

As always, thanks for all of the help.

I have this same whining noise going on right now and have determined it is the idler pulley that is just above the water pump pulley. The FSM calls it the Drive Belt Timing Pulley, but I can assure you it has nothing to do with the timing belt, only the serpentine belt. I'm just wondering if the part # mentioned above is for this pulley I need. Thanks.
