Our favorite run is Powerline/Hackberry, though by far the best sections ARE NOT mentioned in any books.

The Hackberry wash section is fair at best with heavy brush and little challenge. The spots not in books that should NOT be missed are:

1. Entrance via Apache Leap (FH315 from AZ177) is a long and VERY scenic climb with good challenge.
From top....you follow the Powerline Trail (not the Hackberry Trail)
2. Extreme hill (right road on attached pic) leaving the Pond up and over the hill then down via an even more extreme hill into another pond area.
3. Exit from this pond area is via either a slickrock (STEEP) or a very tight canyon with ledges out to Oak Flat. Info on this section at:
http://www.expeditionswest.com/adventures/2004/hackberry_nov/index.html

Running the book path is a good run. Running all the above is an extreme challenge and our #1 choice.

The gate on private land on the Turkey Creek side is still closed. You'd have to go through Mammoth all the way through then backtrack.

I had fun doing that trip about 6 months ago but I am up for any suggestions. I only get about 2 or 3 weekends off a year so I really want to take the cruiser out for a couple of days. If anyone has any ideas of some challenging trails with room to set up camp I am all ears.

CopperStateCruisers: Saturday, the AzLCA ran a trail that simply was spectacular. It's been closed for years though was recently re-opened by permit only. It's to the northwest of Sedona and passes through 2 wilderness areas. Only the road itself is excluded from the wilderness areas in case of line maintenance.
I tell you this because I never heard of the trail and so some of you may not either. If you have interest in attempting to get a permit, I've pasted the trail info below that I received. Pictures just don't do justice to this scenery though I've posted them onto my website here:

Line up a CSC trip for next season, now. [:>)
I'd recommend lockers for safety, though they're not needed. (Although slipping on those edgy climbs might result in.....well, you figure it out. [:>)

I have succeeded in getting a special use permit (four pages long) from the Red Rock Ranger District for AzLCA to run the Casner Mountain Trail #8. This trail is only open from mid-April to mid-October, and only one permit is allowed each 7 days. There is a limit to how many vehicles are allowed on this run (10 max, minimum of 3), so first come, first served. I will keep a waiting list just in case anyone has to back out once we get closer to the date, but I would like to know who is interested ASAP.

There are a lot of restrictions on this run, but it should be very scenic. It has not been open to the public for many years, and previously required a special insurance policy from ASA or some other organization. My brother, who has made this run previously, says that it might be rated as high as 3.0, but it depends on how much rain they have had, and what damage, if any, it has caused. We should have some great views from up there. It starts from FS525C (east and north of Sedona) and ends up at Buck Ridge Cabin (~7000’), sneaking between the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness and the Secret Mountain Wilderness (~ T.18 N. and ~R.3 E.).

We may be able to do Broken Arrow or Soldiers Pass on our way through Sedona on Saturday, October 8, and then do the Casner Mountain Trail-we can discuss details when it gets closer to October 8/9. The plan is to camp Saturday once we get through this run, with elevation somewhere around 7000’. The leaves should be starting to turn, and it might be a little chilly camping (I could go for that right now!). We will drive into Flagstaff on Sunday, October 9, and then come back to the valley (for most of us).

Since I have not been on this run previously, I can’t give out an exact trail rating, but it is described by the Forest Service as:

“The Casner Mountain Trail #8 is extremely steep and rough. Attempting any portion of this route alone or by anyone who is not well versed in 4X4 mountain driving is not recommended. It is a long distance from help, should it be needed.”

They need to describe it that way in order to make sure that there are serious four wheelers attempting it, but also to limit their liability. Let me know if you are interested in going on this run. I have been wanting to go on this run for over 10 years, and am very excited to get this permit.

Shotts, did you do this?

Did I miss your report? Wonder if it'd still be open into Nov, I would love to do that.

Closed, and get in a long line to do it. I'm hoping to do it again in my lifetime. I'll be adding more pics to my website soon.

Anybody been there? We have talked about going there to hunt. Anyone know the Landcruiser or people in the pictures? Looks like fun place to go and explore.

Sean
I was on this trip. (Brittan Smith-Tacoma Dcab.)
It is a great trail and makes for a good weekend trip. I did see hunters but I don't know what they were hunting for.

I've heard recently that the sibley mansion area is all closed due to wildcat dumping. It's all on private land and all of the access is closed off. The word is that the owners have no intention of allowing ANY access for ANY reason.

Perfect time of year for Jackson Cabin campout....and you can stay in the restored cabins. Look: http://shottscruisers.smugmug.com/gallery/618958

It's got to be done on a DRY weekend. If you get in and it rains you will not get out and up the hills until it dries out. The road surface in places is evil. The run a scenic and on the easier side.

We were in there another time too and just got up the last hill with both lockers on in the 100 going straight up though the vehicle was pointed 45* to the side. We thought the ditch was ours.

Get it planned!

This weekend? April 8th Something in the moderate range for some challenges?

Hmmmm. Saturday.

Ruby, ghost town, and 2 moderate to moderate-plus side trips?

Santa Rita OHV, Lopez and Gunsight Passes included?

Sutherland Trail, short though difficult trail end? (Near the Catalina side of the Gap)

Temporal Gulch?

Chimney Rock, very pretty, brushy spot, play hills (and side trip into 3 Feathers at Chiva)? (Reddington Pass)

Where ya wanna go?

We're planning to go camping probably April 28-30, or the next weekend. Our original plans are for Apache Lake, Burnt Corral campground, but the location is still up in the air.

I'd rather camp with a group of people I know, so if anyone knows of a good location, probably below the rim, near some decent trails, we'd be happy to change location and join up.

Thanks

David
