Anyone know if this is mostly homebuilt, or just a lesser seen .mil trailer?

Military generator trailer. Likely part of the M-116 series of trailers which were the foundation for the M101a (1,2 and 3) trailers and some pioneer models. There are heavier series of trailers that look identical as well. They were a jack of all configurations trailer. Hard to tell without looking at a data plate of standing near it though for me anyway.

That makes sense, I was trying to make it out as a 101 of some type that had been cut. Thanks!

I agree, part of the M116 family tree. Looks like maybe some surplus bows from something else used here, but I'd suggest some sides and a tailgate to be more useful.:p

Also, not sure what the bracket is hanging under the back lip of the bed. Might've been for a support dogleg for when running the ginny stationary?

Correct, the leg is still attached at the aft end. Claims to be a tilt-bed as well, does that make sense?

Might be. I didn't find mention of that feature at the following link, but seem to recall hearing that at some point, just can't cite it right now:

Note that a pic down the page at that link shows a generator trailer with bows like the ones in your pic here. Those may in fact be a stock configuration, rather than a creative adaptation as I thought in my first comment.

If you buy it dont mistake the TILT feature of any of these military trailers. They were not made to dump a load. The tilt feature is so that they could be "stacked" or more properly tucked, up tight to one another for shipping on either ships or aircraft. And with the split rims definitely an A1 trailer. My advice after building a camper on (1) M101a1 and rebuilding another is to ditch that axle and those wheels. Tires are hard to find, harder to get mounted and the parking brakes on them are insanely heavy. Get a 6k lbs axle with hubs to match your truck and never look back. A 6k Lbs axle is pretty close to the same diameter as the original and can use the same shock mounts (need to cut them off of the axle). And these are a direct fit replacement for the shocks: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/C...Gas-Grande-Fleet-Rear/_/R-NS_76992_0019526978

That's good advice, and I decided against it after taking a close look at the running gear - a bit much behind my 40 and I already have an M-416.

Thanks!
